Position Summary
The Research Associate 1 performs laboratory procedures of varying complexity contributing to cross functional activities as part of the Lab Services team. Works primarily with Scientific Operations, a multidisciplinary team within the research and development department.
Primary Responsibilities
- Perform mammalian cell culture including thawing, passaging, and freezing cells.
- Extract nucleic acids from biospecimens using automated and manual methods.
- Isolate plasma and buffy coat from whole blood using manual and automated techniques.
- Operate liquid handling equipment.
- Determine nucleic acid quantity/quality using Quant-IT, Qubit, Nanodrop, and BioAnalyzer.
- Load libraries onto next generation sequencing platforms.
- Interpret data and determine subsequent actions per outlined requirements.
- Perform routine laboratory equipment maintenance per SOPs.
- Recognize equipment malfunctions and escalate issues.
- Report lab process deviations in a timely manner.
- Track sample inventory using LIMS or Google Sheets.
- Maintain accurate lab records using Google Sheets, Excel, and internal databases.
- Review SOPs and work instructions periodically.
- Ensure ethical, compliant management of samples in accordance with regulations.
- Perform additional tasks as required by management.
Additional Requirements
This role involves working with PHI in paper and electronic forms. Completion of HIPAA/PHI privacy, security, and other compliance trainings is required within the first 30 days of hire, along with passing a post-offer criminal background check.
Qualifications
- BS/BA in a biological science or equivalent.
- 0-2 years of relevant laboratory experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Excellent aseptic and pipetting techniques.
- Experience with automated laboratory systems (Hamilton, Tecan, Qiasymphony).
- Familiarity with next generation sequencing platforms.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Knowledge of LIMS/database software.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Drive suite.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Creative and analytical thinking with strong troubleshooting abilities.
- Team player with strong interpersonal skills.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, evolving environment.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
Work is performed primarily in office and laboratory settings. The role requires repetitive motions during pipetting and sample processing, computer usage, telephone communication, and occasional lifting of items weighing up to 25 lbs.
