Overview
Natera is seeking a highly skilled and innovative Lead or Staff Bioinformatics Scientist to join our Bioinformatics team as an individual contributor focused on algorithm development within production-scale pipelines. The role is critical in advancing genomic technologies in Women’s Health and Organ Health with a focus on cell-free DNA (cfDNA) applications.
Primary Responsibilities
- Algorithm Development: Design, implement, and optimize novel algorithms for detecting SNVs, CNVs, and structural variants from cfDNA data. Develop customized biomarkers using SNPs, methylation, fragmentomics, and multiomics methods.
- Production Pipeline Integration: Collaborate with pipeline developers to integrate algorithms into scalable bioinformatics workflows.
- Data Analysis & Validation: Benchmark performance using synthetic, retrospective, and clinical datasets, and define truth sets with clinical teams.
- Cross-functional Collaboration: Work with R&D, Data Science, Pipeline Engineering, and QA to align with clinical standards.
- Innovation & Leadership: Evaluate emerging tools and propose novel statistical or machine learning approaches.
Qualifications
Ph.D. or M.S. in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computer Science, or a related field; 4+ years (Lead) or 7+ years (Staff) of experience in NGS algorithm development, with strong expertise in designing biomarkers, variant calling, and QC strategies.
Technical Skills
- Proficiency in Python and experience with performance optimization.
- Knowledge of NGS variant calling, short-read and long-read platforms.
- Experience with pipeline orchestration tools (e.g., Nextflow, WDL, Snakemake) and Git.
