Research Assistant, Office for Research
The National Institute of Education (NIE) is inviting applications for a 12-month contract position at the Office for Research. The role focuses on the longitudinal study "Understanding the Development and Drivers of Adolescents’ Educational Pathways: The Singapore Longitudinal Cohort Study (Phase 1 of Year 1) (SG-LCS)".
Project Overview
This study aims to:
- Examine secondary education pathways and their development.
- Investigate drivers including self-identity, school/career aspirations, and social contexts.
- Analyze stability and changes in educational trajectories.
- Review early childhood and primary factors influencing pathways.
- Focus on subgroups such as SEN students and financially disadvantaged students.
Research Questions
Projects include examining cross-sectional differences in adolescent lifestyles, evaluating contributions of individual, school, and home factors to wellbeing, and understanding the experiences of adolescents with special educational needs.
Requirements & Preferred Qualifications
Candidates should have a Bachelor’s in Psychology, Sociology, or a related field (advanced degrees considered for senior positions). The ideal candidate is familiar with the Singapore education system, survey data collection, statistical analysis (e.g., factor analysis, regression), and proficient in Microsoft WORD, EXCEL, POWERPOINT, and TEAMS. Preferred skills include familiarity with statistical software (e.g., SPSS, R, Stata, Mplus), experience with databases and Qualtrics, and a solid understanding of educational social psychology theories. Experience in qualitative and quantitative research is highly desirable.
Responsibilities
The role includes:
- Liaising with schools, parents, teachers, and researchers.
- Preparing and implementing data collection efforts.
- Maintaining records and documenting progress.
- Assisting in data preparation, analysis, and report writing.
- Conducting literature reviews and performing independent statistical analysis.
- Handling additional tasks as assigned by the Principal Investigator/Co-PIs.
