About the Role
The Vice President, Software Engineering and Applications serves as the senior IT leader for their division, responsible for setting the software engineering vision, developing delivery strategies, and driving business outcomes through innovative technology solutions. The role supports corporate objectives by effectively leveraging information services resources, applications, support models, and budget. By developing high-performing talent, improving processes, and fostering innovation and accountability, the VP advances Mutual of Omaha’s strategic and long-term goals.
This role is hybrid with travel expectations of up to 50% of the time in Omaha, NE. Relocation assistance is available if interested.

What You'll Do
- Serve as divisional senior IT leader, setting the software engineering vision and leading end to end delivery strategies, plans, and execution.
- Oversee the full software engineering lifecycle—planning, development, deployment, and support—ensuring platforms and applications align with business priorities and organizational objectives.
- Champion modern engineering practices (Agile, DevSecOps, CI/CD, cloud native architectures) to enhance scalability, reliability, and performance.
- Build and lead high-performing engineering teams, fostering technical excellence, innovation, accountability, and continuous improvement.
- Partner with business stakeholders to translate requirements into high-quality, customer focused engineering deliverables.
- Manage relationships with internal partners, vendors, and government entities, including contracts, performance, and procurement.
- Ensure security, compliance, and risk management are integrated into engineering workflows through standards, automation, and metrics.
What You’ll Bring
- Minimum 5 years of senior leadership experience across software engineering, application development, IT infrastructure/operations, architecture, or information security, with a proven record of delivering complex, scalable solutions.
- Strong familiarity with compliance frameworks, regulatory expectations, and risk management, plus experience governing multivendor ecosystems, contract negotiation, and performance management.
- Strong expertise in technology planning, solution development, and modern platforms, operating systems, and programming languages, along with deep knowledge of current and emerging technology trends in insurance, financial services, or related industries.
- Demonstrated strategic leadership—motivating teams, fostering cross organizational collaboration and innovation, and building strong business partnerships.
- Exceptional analytical, problem solving, and decision-making skills with the ability to interpret data, manage risk, and provide sound, innovative recommendations.
- Proven ability to build trusted, collaborative partnerships with senior leaders across IT and the business to align priorities, shape strategy, and drive shared outcomes.
- Experience managing large budgets, capital plans, and complex resource models.
- Proven ability to develop high performing hybrid and remote teams, foster continuous learning, accountability and strong engagement.
