Overview of the Field Service Technician Role
As a traveling Field Service Technician, you will provide mechanical and technical support for MULTIVAC processing and packaging equipment at customer facilities, with a focus on delivering exceptional service. This position involves investigating and resolving customer reports of technical issues, aiming to eliminate future operational or service difficulties. Due to varying customer needs, priorities and schedules are dynamic, requiring strong adaptability.
Time Utilization & Schedule
This is a traveling position requiring overnight stays most workdays. Flexibility is essential to accommodate internal and external customer schedules, including working outside normal business hours and some weekends as required. You must be able to travel with little notice. The position operates on one of two schedules: 10 consecutive days on/4 consecutive days off, or Monday-Friday with one working weekend per month.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Troubleshoot or install complex, customized packaging and processing equipment at customer facilities.
- Repair equipment to customer specifications quickly and efficiently, addressing high-level challenges with mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and robotic systems.
- Act as a crucial communication link between the customer and MULTIVAC, ensuring effective service and updating the regional scheduler on all efforts.
- Communicate regularly with the scheduler, providing job status updates and receiving new assignments.
- Maintain high quality and quantity of work on equipment, listening attentively and asking appropriate questions.
- Complete work assignments with minimum supervision.
- Retrieve and respond to messages daily across all communication tools.
- Consistently make cost-effective and time-efficient travel arrangements (hotel, car rental, flights) within company policy guidelines.
- Keep service team members and customers informed of arrival times.
- Conduct training for customers on safe equipment operations, maintenance, and parts ordering.
- Provide service team contact information for future service and parts needs, ensuring customers are comfortable with operational and safety procedures.
- Complete service documentation of repairs made and submit related trip expenses within 24 hours of job completion.
- Ensure weekly expense reports and time sheets are accurate, timely, and reflect cost-effective expense management.
Education/Experience & Skills Required
An Associate degree or equivalent technical school diploma in electrical or mechanical engineering or a similar discipline is required, or two years of field service, packaging, maintenance, or related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Essential skills include electrical, pneumatic, mechanical, and machine shop skills, along with strong mechanical aptitude.
Candidates must demonstrate the ability to respond and adjust to changing situations, work well in high-stress environments, and maintain professionalism with customers and co-workers. Being a self-starter who can work in unsupervised settings is crucial. Proficiency in troubleshooting basic mechanical, electronic, and operational aspects of machines, focusing on problem-solving and preventative maintenance, is also required. Excellent customer service skills are paramount.
Work Environment
You will serve diverse industries, often food processing and packaging, which may involve working in refrigerator or freezing environments that can be messy. The role regularly exposes you to high noise levels, moving mechanical parts, and the risk of electrical shock. You will work on equipment used for a wide range of products, from sterile medical devices to recently slaughtered animals.
Physical Demands
This is a physically demanding position. While reasonable accommodations are made, technicians typically need to stand, walk, use hands for fine motor skills, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk, and hear. Frequent lifting or moving up to 50lbs is necessary. Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
