About Mountain News / OnTheSnow

Mountain News operates OnTheSnow, Skiinfo, and one of the world’s leading digital platforms for skiers and snowboarders.

Through our websites, mobile app, email products, resort data, snow reports, weather forecasts, travel content, and emerging AI experiences, we help millions of winter travelers decide where to ski, when to go, and how to plan better mountain trips.

OnTheSnow has served the ski and snowboard community for decades. Today, we are reimagining how ski travel information should work in an AI-first world, combining trusted snow and resort data, weather intelligence, personalization, mobile experiences, trip planning, and tools such as SkiGPT.

About the Role

We are looking for a Digital Product Lead to help shape and improve the consumer experience across OnTheSnow.com, Skiinfo, and the OnTheSnow mobile app.

This is a hands-on product role for someone who can turn ideas into product concepts, requirements, prototypes, tests, and shipped improvements. You will work closely with our CTO, COO, design resources, and technical team to identify opportunities, define features, review staging builds, QA releases, and help launch improvements quickly.

We are moving beyond a traditional product development process. Modern AI-assisted tools now allow product-minded people to prototype, test, document, and improve features faster than ever before. Experience with tools such as Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, ChatGPT, GitHub, Jira, Figma, and Vercel is strongly preferred, and candidates who have already used AI-assisted coding or product development tools will be prioritized.

You do not need to be a software engineer. But you should be highly comfortable with technology, curious about AI, willing to learn quickly, and excited to work in a product environment where AI tools are part of the workflow. The ideal candidate is part product manager, part consumer experience thinker, part digital operator, and part practical builder.

What You’ll Do

  • Improve the consumer experience across OnTheSnow.com, Skiinfo, and the OnTheSnow app
  • Identify product opportunities in ski trip planning, resort discovery, snow reports, weather, maps, personalization, app engagement, and user retention
  • Translate ideas into clear requirements, user stories, Jira tickets, workflows, acceptance criteria, and QA plans
  • Use AI-assisted tools to support product exploration, prototyping, QA, documentation, and development workflows
  • Collaborate with our CTO, COO, designers, and technical team to evaluate, test, and launch new features
  • Work with Figma designs and staging builds in Vercel or similar environments
  • Evaluate features from the perspective of real skiers, snowboarders, and winter travelers
  • Prioritize product improvements based on user value, business impact, technical effort, and speed to market
  • Monitor analytics, user behavior, and feedback after launch
  • Help evolve AI-powered consumer experiences, including SkiGPT, personalized resort recommendations, weather intelligence, and trip planning tools

What We’re Looking For

  • Experience as a Product Manager, Product Owner, Digital Product Manager, Growth Product Manager, Technical Product Manager, or similar role
  • Strong understanding of consumer digital products, ideally in travel, outdoor recreation, skiing, snowboarding, weather, maps, mobile apps, marketplaces, or digital media
  • Strong product judgment and ability to understand what consumers actually need when planning a trip
  • Ability to write clear requirements, tickets, test cases, and product specifications
  • Strong QA instincts and attention to detail
  • Comfort working with product, design, engineering, and business stakeholders
  • Familiarity with modern digital tools such as Jira, GitHub, Figma, analytics platforms, staging environments, and AI tools
  • Experience with Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, ChatGPT, or similar AI-assisted coding/productivity tools is strongly preferred
  • A skier or snowboarder is strongly preferred; strong travel or outdoor industry experience is also highly relevant
  • Strong written English communication
  • Ability to work independently as a remote contractor
  • Practical, entrepreneurial working style

Strongly Preferred

  • Experience using AI-assisted coding or prototyping tools in a real workflow
  • Experience building or managing mobile app features
  • Experience with travel planning, resort discovery, booking funnels, weather products, maps, personalization, recommendation systems, or content platforms
  • Basic technical literacy, including APIs, front-end/back-end concepts, data flows, staging/production environments, and analytics
  • Comfort reviewing designs and suggesting UX improvements
  • Experience working with distributed teams in Europe and North America
  • Interest in how AI is changing product management, software development, travel planning, and consumer media

Nice to Have

  • Experience with snow sports, mountain travel, ski resorts, outdoor recreation, or adventure travel
  • Experience with consumer subscription, advertising, affiliate, marketplace, or media revenue models
  • Familiarity with SEO, content platforms, app engagement, CRM, email, or digital audience development
  • Experience with analytics tools such as GA4, Looker Studio, Amplitude, Mixpanel, or similar
  • Basic understanding of weather, geolocation, maps, resort data, or travel recommendation systems

Working Style

This role is for someone who likes to build, test, learn, and improve quickly.

We are not looking for someone who only manages process. We are looking for someone who can take an idea, shape it into a product concept, work with design and technical tools, review a staging build, identify issues, and help decide whether to ship, revise, or move on.

You do not need every technical skill on day one. But you should be eager to learn, comfortable experimenting, and excited to work in a fast-changing environment where AI tools are becoming central to product development.

Time Commitment

  • Part-time contractor role
  • Approximately 20–30 hours per week
  • Remote (Located in North America or Europe)
  • Flexible schedule, with availability for regular meetings with U.S. and European team members

Compensation

Compensation will be based on experience, location, and availability.

Why This Role Is Interesting

OnTheSnow and Skiinfo sit at the intersection of skiing, travel, weather, mobile apps, resort discovery, data, and AI. Few categories are more naturally suited to AI-powered product innovation: skiers want to know where the snow is best, when to go, what conditions will feel like, which resort is right for them, and how to plan the best possible trip. This is an opportunity to help an established brand with a passionate audience build faster, work smarter, and redefine how skiers and snowboarders use digital tools to plan mountain experiences.
