Job Description

Staff Nurse - Medical/Surgical at Mount Sinai Health System

As a Staff Nurse - Medical/Surgical at Mount Sinai West, you will be responsible for the comprehensive care activities and goal achievement of assigned patients. This involves assessing, diagnosing, planning, and intervening in actual or potential health problems, as well as evaluating the patient's response to care. A key component of this role includes health teaching and discharge planning. You will function as a vital member of a designated care team, collaborating, coordinating, and guiding team members in planning patient care activities. Your behaviors will consistently reflect the scientific knowledge, sound judgment, and teaching skills expected of a professional nurse.

This is a Part-Time (30 hours) position, primarily working Night shifts, with an every-other-weekend rotation.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct nursing assessments thoroughly based on patient interviews, examinations, observations, and record reviews.
  • Ensure patient progress or lack thereof is accurately documented in progress notes and revised care plans.
  • Develop discharge plans consistent with patient status, reflecting inter-departmental and inter-agency communication.
  • Communicate essential information to patients, tailored to their level of awareness and readiness to learn.
  • Support the orientation of new staff members by observing professional behaviors, providing constructive feedback, and acting as a preceptor, role model, and resource.
  • Function as a professional role model and mentor for nursing students and volunteers.
  • Make patient care assignments reflecting an awareness of patient needs and the skill level of personnel.
  • Organize the provision of care to meet the priority needs of both patients and the unit effectively.
  • Communicate patient conditions and unit needs requiring additional intervention to relevant leadership personnel.
  • Actively participate in the professional development of other staff members.
  • Communicate with peers in an appraisal of practice related to self and other nursing personnel.
  • Reflect collaborative efforts in meeting patient and unit needs through effective communication and nursing actions.
  • Provide direction, assistance, and support to team members.
  • Assume full accountability and responsibility for the completion and quality of assigned tasks.
  • Identify and communicate to your immediate supervisor the need for further staff education.
  • Reflect awareness of the authorities and responsibilities of nursing management levels through communication with nursing leadership.
  • Seek and utilize nursing leaders as valuable role models and resource persons.
  • Reflect collaborative effort in meeting patient and unit needs by communicating effectively with other disciplines.
  • Consistently reflect the philosophy, goals, and objectives of the Department of Nursing and the Hospital Center in all communications and interactions with families and other groups.

Qualifications

  • A strong capacity to learn, synthesize information, make critical judgments, prioritize patients and families, and collaborate effectively with recognized leaders within health care.
  • At least one year of acute care RN experience is required.
  • Relevant clinical competence specifically in medical/surgical nursing practice is critical for success.
  • BLS / BCLS certification is required.
  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN) is required for all Clinical RN positions.
  • Possession of a current New York State Registered Nurse (RN) license (or willingness and eligibility to obtain one).
