About This Role

Morningstar Sustainalytics is on a mission to empower investor success through our Climate and Sustainability research, data, and solutions. As the Chief Data Officer, you will be the primary executive responsible for the strategic use of data, a critical asset for client decision-making. Reporting to the President of Morningstar Sustainalytics, you will sit on the senior leadership team and collaborate closely with Morningstar’s CXOs and other corporate executives.

Main Areas of Responsibility

Data Strategy and Governance: Define and implement a data strategy aligned with business goals, establish data governance frameworks, and oversee policies, standards, and compliance (e.g., GDPR, CCPA).

Data Architecture and Infrastructure: Collaborate with technology and product teams to build scalable data platforms, ensuring robust tools for data collection, transformation, storage, and processing. Lead programs in data deduplication, consolidation, and advanced analytics including machine learning and NLP.

Data Quality and Stewardship: Monitor and improve data accuracy, completeness, and reliability while promoting accountability across departments.

Analytics and Insights: Enable advanced analytics, AI, and machine learning initiatives with demonstrable ROI. Work with business units to translate data into actionable insights and drive data democratization.

Risk Management and Compliance: Mitigate risks related to data privacy, security, and misuse, ensuring compliance with regulatory and ethical standards.

Culture and Change Management: Foster a data-driven culture and lead change management for improved data literacy and adoption.

Collaboration and Leadership: Manage and develop a global team of around 500 data professionals, partnering with Sustainalytics and Morningstar leaders to align data initiatives and represent data interests in strategic planning.

Who You Are

A seasoned leader with a minimum of 15 years in strategy, data management, and operations leadership. You have deep expertise in sustainability, mutual fund, equity, and fixed-income data along with robust experience in extraction, transformation, normalization, warehousing, and reporting. Excellent communication skills and familiarity with Big Data technologies further accentuate your profile.

Work Environment

Morningstar offers a hybrid work environment where in-person collaboration is key. Typically, employees work in-office four days a week, supported by flexible tools and resources for global engagement.
