Job Description

Join Mizuho as an Observability Engineering Lead!

We are seeking a hands-on and passionate engineering professional to join our diverse and growing Infrastructure Engineering and Cloud Enablement organization as an Observability Engineering Lead. This role involves design and implementation activities to create new or improve existing observability and monitoring capabilities. It requires expertise in observability architecture, automating delivery and management tasks, provisioning and configuration management, and other aspects of building robust observability solutions.

Success in this role is built upon a solid understanding of infrastructure, networking, and applications across on-premises, cloud, and hybrid environments. The Observability Engineering Lead will directly engage with individual teams across the organization and develop observability capabilities that span multiple teams and projects. A key function of this role is also to promote and demonstrate the value of observability.

What You’ll Do

  • Provide expert knowledge on observability approaches, standards, and platforms to achieve organizational goals and improve observability maturity. This includes translating strategy and architecture into efficient, resilient, and secure technical implementations.
  • Offer guidance and establish standards for telemetry lifecycle management, including managing the retention and granularity of collected and stored telemetry based on various use cases.
  • Design, build, and enhance existing observability solutions. This involves developing observability strategies such as OpenTelemetry, eBPF, and utilizing monitoring-as-code (MaC) with a shift-left mindset, in collaboration with platform engineering teams.
  • Support application and enterprise architects in designing reusable observability artifacts and developing new solutions, analyzing observability requirements, and assisting with technical architecture activities.
  • Collaborate closely with network, application, infrastructure, data, and security specialists to design, implement, and ensure observability activities meet requirements and align with best practices.

What We’re Looking For

  • 8 or more years of related experience as an Observability Engineer or similar role in Infrastructure Engineering, Operations, or SRE environments.
  • Experience with observability implementation or migration projects (e.g., greenfield, tool consolidation).
  • Proficiency with popular observability tools and platforms such as Prometheus, Telegraf, Grafana stack, ELK, and Azure Monitor.
  • Familiarity with popular observability protocols, formats, and standards like OpenTelemetry, eBPF, and Prometheus.
  • Experience with infrastructure-as-code and automation approaches (e.g., Ansible, Python, Terraform) and CI/CD tools (e.g., Azure DevOps and Git-based workflows).
  • Exposure to various monitoring platforms is preferred (e.g., SolarWinds, OpsRamp, ExtraHop).
  • Exposure to Cloud Service Providers (Azure), virtualization (VMWare), and containerization technologies (K8s, OpenShift) is preferred.
  • Strong architectural skills and the ability to design scalable, reusable solutions.
  • Proactive, detail-oriented, strong analytical skills, and a data-driven approach.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with internal customers including infra, app, data, and security teams.
