Overview: Senior Director, Intellectual Policy & Strategy at Microsoft
Microsoft’s Intellectual Property Group is looking for a Senior Director, Intellectual Policy & Strategy to join its Open Innovation team. This team crafts legal and policy solutions to empower Microsoft, its customers, partners, and developers to thrive through open innovation.
As a core member of the Open Innovation team, you will be instrumental in developing and executing Microsoft's global IP policy agenda, with a particular focus on copyright and open data. You will navigate various jurisdictions to lead critical IP conversations, especially concerning AI diffusion. Leveraging your deep subject matter expertise and extensive professional networks, you will shape policies that align with Microsoft’s mission to empower every person and organization globally.
Responsibilities
- Develop and execute Microsoft’s global intellectual property policy agenda, championing initiatives that promote thoughtful AI diffusion.
- Collaborate effectively with internal teams and external stakeholders to create and deliver materials addressing emerging regulatory challenges.
- Analyze complex policy landscapes, contributing insights to produce impactful position papers, policy briefings, and advocacy strategies within dynamic regulatory and political environments.
- Build and strengthen relationships with government policymakers, industry influencers, civil society, researchers, and academic partners to articulate Microsoft’s perspective in the policy space and foster collaborative outcomes.
- Coordinate external engagements, convenings, and industry reports to shape the policy conversation in evolving regulatory and political environments.
Qualifications
Required/Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Public Policy, Public Administration, Political Science, Business Administration, Technology, Law, Liberal Arts, Engineering, or a related field AND demonstrable work experience in government affairs, corporate affairs, public policy, government, or a related area OR equivalent experience.
- Demonstrable experience in managing and developing intellectual property policies, including the interpretation and implementation of IP frameworks and compliance standards.
Additional or Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Public Policy, Public Administration, Political Science, Business Administration, Technology, Law, Liberal Arts, Engineering, or a related field AND extensive work experience in government affairs, corporate affairs, public policy, government, or a related area OR equivalent experience.
- Demonstrable experience in developing and managing strategic relationships to advocate for and influence public, regulatory, and technology policy priorities.
- Demonstrable experience influencing, developing, or supporting public policy or political campaigns.
- Proven impact in technology policy roles, with a history of contributing to advocacy efforts or policy initiatives in intellectual property and artificial intelligence.
- Proficiency in analyzing and interpreting regulatory processes, with the ability to align policy insights with strategic product and business goals.
- Expertise with copyright and open data initiatives.
- Proficient problem-solving skills, demonstrating adaptability in navigating shifting policy landscapes and emerging challenges.
- Passion for technology policy, with experience participating in technology communities, standards bodies, and open-source communities.
