Overview of the Research SDE Role at Microsoft Research India

Microsoft Research India (MSR India) is a leading research lab committed to advancing innovation across key research areas such as Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning, Theory, Technology & Empowerment, and Systems. With two decades of pioneering computer science research in India, the lab is home to world-class talent and projects.

We are actively seeking to hire research engineers for our Microsoft Research India team. Ideal candidates will demonstrate an exceptional track record in AI/ML, encompassing new models, scalable ML architectures, system support for these workloads, and innovative large-scale applications of ML models. Projects within the lab are inherently inter-disciplinary, spanning research areas like artificial intelligence, machine learning, natural language processing, information retrieval, systems, and theory.

Responsibilities

We are seeking engineers with robust coding and engineering skills. The successful candidate must be comfortable addressing open-ended problems, exploring new technologies, and adapting to evolving requirements, fulfilling various project roles as needed. This role involves close collaboration with researchers, engineers, and internal/external partners, taking ownership of project goals through the delivery of high-quality solutions. This position also offers significant opportunities for mentorship, as well as for mentoring and leading interns and other team members.

Qualifications

Required:

• Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D. degree in Computer Science or related disciplines.
• Strong programming and communication skills, with the ability to drive end-to-end research and development, from ideation to deployment.
• Minimum 5 years of industry work experience with a proven track record of innovation and delivering impactful solutions.

Preferred:

• Good understanding of deep learning, LLMs, and large-scale ML systems.
• Proficiency in Python, PyTorch, and familiarity with CUDA, cutting-edge agentic frameworks, etc.
• Experience in data preparation, pre-training, post-training, and evaluation for ML models.
