Research Internships at Microsoft offer a dynamic environment for research careers within a network of world-class research labs. Responsibilities
Research Interns apply inquiry and theory in practical settings. They learn, collaborate, and network alongside fellow doctoral candidates and leading researchers. Interns not only advance their own careers but also contribute significantly to exciting research and development. During the typical 12-week internship, Research Interns are paired with mentors, collaborate with peers and researchers, present their findings, and actively participate in the vibrant community. Internships are available across all research areas and are offered year-round, commonly starting in the summer.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- Accepted or currently enrolled in a PhD program or an equivalent research-oriented program in Computer Science or a related STEM field.
Other Requirements
- Research Interns are expected to be physically located in their manager’s Microsoft worksite location for the duration of their internship.
- Submission of a minimum of two reference letters, a cover letter, and any relevant work or research samples is required. Requests for letters may be sent after application submission, and candidates are advised to alert their letter writers in advance.
Preferred Qualifications
- Expertise in formal methods, including experience improving theorem provers and proof tools, or
- Expertise in programming languages, including experience in type systems, static and dynamic analysis tools, programming models, and runtimes, or
- Expertise in AI and software engineering, including experience building robust and secure agentic workflows and ML models for software engineering tasks.
