Overview

Microsoft is seeking Data Research Engineers to join their Multimodal team. In this role, you will help design and curate high-quality datasets to power frontier AI models across vision, language, audio, and beyond.

Role

Work at the intersection of data and innovation by collaborating with scientists, engineers, and annotators. You will:

  • Develop novel data collection strategies
  • Improve dataset quality and integrity
  • Understand data-driven model behaviors
  • Align datasets with ethical and societal values

This cross-disciplinary role is ideal for engineers who want to push the boundaries of what AI can learn from multimodal data.

Microsoft Superintelligence Team

The team operates like a startup within Microsoft AI. Their mission is to build ultra-capable, controllable AI systems that are safety-aligned and anchored to human values, impacting billions of users globally.

Work Arrangement

Starting January 26, 2026, employees are expected to work from a designated Microsoft office at least four days a week if residing within a specified distance.

Responsibilities

  • Create high-quality datasets for training and evaluation
  • Develop and maintain scalable data pipelines for multimodal ingestion and preprocessing
  • Analyze diverse datasets for quality, diversity, and relevance
  • Build tools for dataset auditing, visualization, and versioning
  • Collaborate with Safety, Ethics, and Governance teams

Qualifications

Required: Bachelor's Degree in a related technical field and 4+ years of experience or equivalent. Proficiency in Python and data libraries (Pandas, NumPy, etc.).

Preferred: Master's Degree with 8+ years or Bachelor's with 12+ years of technical experience, plus 2+ years in data analysis or data engineering, familiarity with Spark, Ray, or Apache Beam, and strong communication skills.

Compensation

Software Engineering levels IC4 and IC5 have competitive base pay ranges. Specific ranges vary by region.
