About the Founding Data Scientist Role
We’re hiring our Founding Data Scientist to help define how data shapes decisions at Merge.
This is a hands-on, high-ownership role for someone who enjoys being early: setting up the data foundation, digging into real product and business questions, and turning messy inputs into clear direction. You move independently, decide what’s worth digging into, and don’t wait for perfect prompts.
You’ll be trusted to take ambiguous problems, form a clear point of view using data, and communicate it concisely—what’s happening, what to do next, and why it matters—so the company can move forward with confidence.
What You Will Do
- Own Merge’s data work end-to-end, from ingestion and modeling to analysis and recommendation.
- Design, build, and maintain core data pipelines in partnership with engineering.
- Decide what to measure and why, rather than waiting for questions to be asked.
- Analyze usage, adoption, reliability, and revenue data to surface opportunities and risks.
- Deliver clear, actionable recommendations with explicit tradeoffs and success metrics.
The Ideal Candidate Will Have
- 5–8+ years of experience in data science, decision science, or analytics-heavy roles.
- Proven track record of operating with autonomy in ambiguous environments.
- Strong fluency in SQL and Python, with comfort reading and modifying production code.
- Experience designing, building, or owning production data pipelines and data models.
- Ability to turn messy, incomplete data into clear, decision-ready insight.
- Excellent written and verbal communication, with a concise and opinionated point of view.
Compensation
The cash compensation range for this role is $210,000 - $230,000. Actual compensation packages are based on a wide array of factors unique to each candidate, including but not limited to skill set, years & depth of experience, and certifications. In addition to cash compensation, all full time employees receive an equity compensation package.
Benefits
- Unlimited PTO + 10 company holidays
- Pre-Tax commuter benefits
- 100% covered health, vision, and dental insurance
- 401K Plan
- $200 one-time home office stipend
- In office snacks and free dinner when working past 7pm
