Job Description

Financial Crimes Compliance Modeling & Analytics Manager at Mercury

Mercury is actively building a comprehensive finance stack for startups, striving to offer the most intuitive and secure banking experience. This commitment aims to simplify the financial operations for entrepreneurs and business owners while rigorously protecting Mercury, its customers, and the broader financial ecosystem from illicit activities.

Although Mercury operates as a fintech company and not an FDIC-insured bank, it plays a vital role within the U.S. financial landscape. By providing banking services to ambitious entrepreneurs, Mercury is instrumental in identifying and preventing bad actors from exploiting the U.S. financial system.

The BSA/AML & Sanctions compliance team oversees the entire Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and Sanctions program. As a Financial Crimes Compliance Modeling & Analytics Manager, you will be crucial in enhancing our financial crimes compliance (FCC) detection models and strengthening Mercury’s overall FCC framework. Your role will involve developing, tuning, and maintaining Mercury’s transaction monitoring (TM) and Sanctions models, as well as creating analytics and metrics to assess FCC program health and develop executive-level reports.

This is a technical position requiring a robust analytical background and deep FCC subject-matter expertise. You will collaborate closely with risk strategy, engineering, and compliance teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Utilize SQL and other analytical tools to conduct in-depth analysis of Mercury’s customers, transactions, alerts, TM rules, and risk ratings.
  • Employ data-driven methodologies to improve, design, implement, and maintain Mercury’s FCC models, including those for transaction monitoring, sanctions screening, customer risk scoring, and relevant alert generation.
  • Develop customized transaction monitoring rules specifically tailored to address Mercury’s unique AML risks.
  • Partner with Compliance, Product, and Data leaders to translate regulatory requirements into effective analytical frameworks.
  • Communicate complex data insights effectively, enabling clear understanding of analytics output and meaning.
  • Possess a comprehensive understanding of both the 'what' and 'why' behind FCC analytics – recognizing the specific objectives and their significance.
  • Create and maintain detailed documentation for FCC model configurations, including scenarios, thresholds, segments, and tuning, along with any subsequent changes.
  • Assist in evaluating and tuning existing detection models and rules to minimize false positives while upholding regulatory standards.
  • Develop data-driven approaches to identify emerging typologies, risks, and evolving financial crime trends.
  • Collaborate with Model Risk Management to support the validation and performance monitoring of models, ensuring adherence to internal and regulatory standards.

Qualifications

  • 12+ years of experience conducting in-depth data analytics.
  • Profound understanding of FCC/AML fundamentals, encompassing both principles and regulations.
  • Exceptional proficiency with standard analytical tools, with top-notch SQL skills being mandatory and experience with Python, R, or similar languages preferred.
  • Strong capability to transform data and analyses into compelling narratives.
  • 7+ years of experience in FCC or AML-related analytics roles.
  • Demonstrated experience in identifying and implementing improvements for both data-related and operational efficiencies.
  • Possess the technical writing skills to effectively translate complex code into clear, concise language and vice versa.
