Job Description

Financial Crimes Compliance Modeling & Analytics Manager at Mercury

Mercury is building a complete finance stack for startups, striving to create the easiest and safest banking experience possible for entrepreneurs and business owners. This role ensures Mercury protects its customers and the broader financial ecosystem from harmful, illegal, or unauthorized activities, operating within the U.S. financial ecosystem though not a bank itself.

The BSA/AML & Sanctions compliance team oversees the overall AML & Sanctions program. As a Financial Crimes Compliance Modeling & Analytics Manager, you will be instrumental in enhancing Mercury’s financial crimes compliance (FCC) detection models and improving the overall FCC framework. This critical position involves developing, tuning, and maintaining Mercury’s transaction monitoring (TM) and Sanctions models, while also creating analytics and metrics to track FCC program health and develop executive-level reporting.

This technical role demands a strong analytical background combined with deep FCC subject-matter expertise. The Manager of Modeling and Analytics will collaborate closely with risk strategy, engineering, and compliance teams.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Utilize SQL and other analytical tools for in-depth analysis of Mercury’s customers, transactions, alerts, TM rules, and risk ratings.
  • Employ data-driven methodologies to improve, design, implement, and maintain Mercury’s FCC models, including transaction monitoring, sanctions screening, customer risk scoring, and relevant alert models.
  • Develop bespoke transaction monitoring rules specifically tailored to address Mercury’s unique AML risks.
  • Partner with Compliance, Product, and Data leaders to translate complex regulatory requirements into effective analytical frameworks.
  • Communicate insights clearly and compellingly through data storytelling, ensuring understanding of analytics output and meaning.
  • Maintain a deep understanding of both the 'what' and 'why' behind FCC analytics, knowing what to look for and its significance.
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive documentation on FCC model configurations, including scenarios, thresholds, segments, tuning, and any subsequent changes.
  • Assist in evaluating and tuning existing detection models and rules to minimize false positives while upholding strict regulatory rigor.
  • Develop data-driven methods to identify new typologies, emerging risks, and evolving financial crime trends.
  • Collaborate with Model Risk Management to support model validation and performance monitoring, ensuring adherence to internal and regulatory standards.

Qualifications:

  • 12+ years of experience conducting in-depth data analytics.
  • Deep understanding of FCC/AML fundamentals, including principles and regulations.
  • Outstanding proficiency with standard analytical tools, with top-notch SQL skills required.
  • Preferred experience with Python, R, or similar programming languages.
  • Strong ability to transform data and analyses into compelling narratives.
  • 7+ years of experience in FCC or AML-related analytics roles.
  • Proven experience identifying and implementing data-related and operational efficiencies.
  • Excellent technical writing skills, capable of translating complex code into clear, plain English and vice versa.

Compensation:

The total rewards package at Mercury includes a competitive base salary, equity (stock options/RSUs), and comprehensive benefits. Salary and equity ranges are highly competitive within the SaaS and fintech industry, regularly updated with reliable compensation survey data. New hire offers are determined based on a candidate’s experience, expertise, geographic location, and internal pay equity.
