Role Overview
The Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) provides timely transportation between appropriate facilities. This role demands a high level of professionalism, communication, and knowledge, as EMRs operate in the public eye. You will be required to conduct yourself in a safe and discreet manner, accountable for your conduct to patients, family members, hospital staff, management, public agencies, and legal courts. As an employee of MHS, you are accountable to our patients, coworkers, and management by supporting all safety-related initiatives and fostering a culture focused on patient safety and a safe workplace.
Duties and Tasks
- Non-Emergency Transport: Maintain personal knowledge and skills per the Alberta Occupational Competency Profile (AOCP) for optimum patient care. Safely operate MHS-West vehicles according to the Health and Safety Manual, Operational Guidelines, and all regulations. Stock and maintain vehicles for readiness. Work in hazardous environments to ensure patient safety. Collaborate with outside agencies in a coordinated effort for patient care. Document all patient care, assessments, and skills in the patient care report legibly and timely. Be punctual and ready at the start of your shift. Act professionally and handle conflict with good judgment. Follow the MHS-West chain of command.
- Communication: Create and maintain fully completed electronic patient care reports (ePCRs). Uphold patient confidentiality per provincial and federal regulations. Refer all media requests to the General Manager of MHS-West. Report all incidents and complete written incident report forms to the General Manager or designate.
- Education: Maintain educational competencies required by the Alberta College of Paramedics. Stay functionally aware of MHS-West Operational Guidelines and AHS medical control guidelines. Actively participate in the MHS-West Quality Assurance Program.
- Physical Ability: Must be in good physical health with no disabilities impairing duties. Involves considerable lifting and movement of heavy patients. Must be able to extricate patients from hazardous environments. Advise superintendent of any injuries that may impair duties.
- Public Relations: Actively participate in approved public awareness and community education programs. Maintain a professional appearance with the approved uniform and adhere to hygienic and grooming standards.

Qualifications
- High School Diploma or G.E.D.
- Alberta Operators License class 1, 2, or 4.
- Current registration with the Alberta College of Paramedics.
- Completion of Alberta Health Services MCP’s.
License/Certification
- Certified in and maintains CPR certification.
- Current registration with the Alberta College of Paramedics.
- FARE Certificate required.
Compensation
Salary: $21.12 - $24.69 Hourly as per MHSW Central Alberta Employee Compensation Program.
