Job Summary: Science Writing Intern
Mass General Brigham is seeking a motivated undergraduate or graduate student for a Summer 2026 internship. This role is ideal for individuals with a strong background in and passion for science, who are interested in gaining experience on a communications team.
The Science Writing Intern will directly support the Director for Research Communications and the wider research communications team. You will be responsible for identifying, assessing, and writing compelling stories about cutting-edge research and innovation across Mass General Brigham. Interns will benefit from mentorship by experienced science communicators and will have valuable opportunities to network with communications professionals throughout the Mass General Brigham system.
Key Activities
- Research, report, and write articles for various communication publications and e-newsletters, including the Mass General Brigham newsroom and Bench Press blog, covering topics in basic, translational, clinical, and digital sciences.
- Write and contribute to news summaries, research spotlights, and press releases on newly published research papers across a range of scientific and medical subjects.
- Conduct interviews with subject matter experts for stories, Q&As, and profiles.
- Participate in meetings with marketing and communications team members and other groups supporting the Mass General Brigham research community.
- Share media and social media coverage of new papers with clinicians and researchers.
- Previous interns have also shadowed and/or supported the media relations team on media interviews and press conferences, attended (virtually or in person) and covered research events, developed social media content, and contributed to video productions.
Qualifications
- Currently pursuing a bachelor's or master’s degree, or a recent graduate within 1-2 years post-degree, with coursework in health, science writing, or science (preferably biological sciences), coupled with an interest in writing and/or journalism.
- Must possess excellent writing and organizational skills.
- Must demonstrate professionalism and a strong willingness to learn.
- Familiarity with AP style and/or journalistic writing is a plus.
- Must demonstrate an aptitude for writing science content that is accessible to a lay audience.
Schedule and Compensation
This is a 20 hours/week internship for 10-12 weeks during Summer 2026, with a target start date of May 2026. This is a remote position, requiring adherence to Eastern Standard business hours. A quiet, secure, and stable working station is required. This position is available for course credit. The hourly pay range is $17.71 - $25.28.
