Job Description

About the Role: Transportation Engineer I, Materials and Geotechnical

The State Highway Administration (SHA) is actively recruiting for a Transportation Engineer I within the Materials and Geotechnology Track, based at the Office of Materials Technology (OMT) in Anne Arundel County's Hanover Complex. This position is open to qualified candidates who meet the specified minimum qualifications. The resulting list of eligible individuals will be utilized to fill current and future vacancies across the agency, potentially including other locations throughout the state of Maryland.

As a Transportation Engineer I, you will perform essential engineering duties that support project development, highway infrastructure, asset management, and construction projects, alongside conducting critical condition assessments. In a learning capacity, this role involves a variety of responsibilities depending on the division joined. These may include conducting materials certification reviews, performing materials Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) testing and evaluation both in the laboratory and in the field, and utilizing materials test results for pavement and geotechnical design. You may also engage in hands-on forensic evaluations of structures, prepare detailed inspection reports, and offer repair recommendations under the guidance of an experienced engineer.

Effective communication is a key aspect of this role. You will be expected to communicate clearly and efficiently with contractors, engineers, and OMT personnel to ensure project completion. This includes reviewing, understanding, and effectively explaining project documents, specifications, and drawings to contractors. Additionally, you will attend pre-construction and progressive meetings, acting as a crucial liaison between the District, OMT, and contractors.

Qualifications

Education: Possession of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited university in any of the following fields: biological engineering, chemical engineering, civil engineering, civil engineering technology, geological engineering, materials engineering, metallurgy engineering, structural engineering, transportation engineering, or welding engineering.

Experience: None required.

Note: Individuals currently registered as Professional Engineers in the State of Maryland, or in a state with comparable requirements, are considered to have met the education requirements. Applicants within ten (10) months of meeting the minimum qualifications may also apply, provided they submit the required documents.

Application Process

To be considered for this position, you must apply online at http://www.governmentjobs.com/careers/mdotmd. You must submit your resume (DTS-1), a copy of your driver's license, and a copy of your transcript with your electronic application. If your degree is from a foreign university, your transcript must be evaluated on a course-by-course basis by one of the listed entities, and verification of submission for evaluation must be provided within three days of application.

All applicants must list their Maryland motor vehicle operator's license number and expiration date if assigned duties require vehicle operation. Resumes are not accepted in lieu of a completed application; ensure all relevant experience is detailed in the online DTS-1 form. The selected candidate may undergo background and reference checks. Bilingual applicants are encouraged to apply.
