About the role
MARA is seeking an experienced Senior Software Engineer to help build and scale the backend systems that power Vertebr.ai, a core platform supporting MARA’s mining operations, energy management systems, and operational intelligence capabilities. In this role, you will work closely with the Lead Software Engineer and cross-functional partners to design, implement, and operate reliable backend services, APIs, data integrations, and automation workflows.
This role is ideal for a backend-focused engineer who can take complex technical problem statements, break them down into well-scoped implementation plans, and deliver high-quality production systems with limited guidance. You will contribute directly to critical platform capabilities while helping improve system reliability, performance, maintainability, and developer velocity.
The ideal candidate has strong backend engineering fundamentals, experience with production systems, and the judgment to make practical technical decisions in a fast-moving environment. You should be comfortable owning meaningful parts of a system, collaborating across software, platform, data, SCADA, and operations teams, and mentoring less-experienced engineers through code reviews and technical guidance.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Backend Software Design & Development
- Design, build, test, and maintain backend services, APIs, data models, integrations, and automation workflows for Vertebr.ai.
- Develop scalable and reliable software that supports mining operations, energy systems, operational intelligence, and internal platform capabilities.
- Translate technical problem statements into clear implementation tasks, estimates, and deliverables.
- Write clean, maintainable, well-tested, and well-documented code in production systems.
- Contribute to backend architecture decisions, service boundaries, API design, data contracts, and integration patterns.
- Build systems that are secure, observable, performant, and maintainable across cloud, on-premises, and hybrid environments.
Technical Execution & Ownership
- Own backend features and services from design through implementation, release, monitoring, and production support.
- Work independently on complex engineering problems while seeking feedback on key design and tradeoff decisions.
- Partner with the Lead Software Engineer to execute the Vertebr.ai technical roadmap and deliver high-impact backend capabilities.
- Break down ambiguous or complex work into manageable tasks and communicate progress, risks, and dependencies clearly.
- Participate in technical planning, estimation, system design discussions, and implementation reviews.
- Make sound engineering tradeoffs across reliability, speed, cost, complexity, scalability, and long-term maintainability.
Reliability, Performance & Operations
- Monitor, troubleshoot, and improve the reliability, performance, scalability, and security of backend production systems.
- Develop automated tests, validation tools, and operational checks to improve system quality and release confidence.
- Improve observability through logging, metrics, tracing, alerting, dashboards, and actionable runbooks.
- Investigate production issues, identify root causes, and implement durable fixes.
- Identify opportunities to reduce operational overhead through automation, better tooling, and simpler system design.
- Contribute to deployment, CI/CD, incident response, and operational readiness practices.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Collaborate with product, frontend, data, platform, SCADA, operations, and leadership stakeholders to deliver integrated software solutions.
- Work with data and platform engineers to integrate backend services with telemetry pipelines, data stores, infrastructure, and deployment environments.
- Communicate technical concepts, design choices, risks, and implementation details clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Participate in code reviews, design reviews, and team planning sessions.
- Help ensure backend systems align with MARA’s operational needs and broader engineering standards.
Mentorship & Engineering Excellence
- Mentor junior and mid-level engineers through code reviews, pairing, technical feedback, and practical design guidance.
- Share backend development best practices related to testing, maintainability, security, observability, and production ownership.
- Help raise the quality bar for engineering execution, documentation, and operational discipline.
- Stay current with relevant backend technologies, frameworks, infrastructure patterns, and engineering practices.
- Recommend improvements to tools, libraries, workflows, and development practices when they improve team effectiveness.

- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
- 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, with significant backend or distributed systems experience.
- Strong proficiency in at least one modern backend programming language such as Python, Go, Java, or TypeScript.
- Experience designing, building, testing, and operating production backend services, APIs, and integrations.
- Experience with relational and/or NoSQL databases, data modeling, service-to-service integrations, and distributed system fundamentals.
- Experience working in cloud, on-premises, or hybrid infrastructure environments.
- Familiarity with CI/CD, automated testing, observability, containerization, and production support practices.
- Ability to independently decompose complex technical problems and deliver high-quality solutions with limited guidance.
- Strong debugging, troubleshooting, and root-cause analysis skills across application and infrastructure layers.
- Strong ownership mindset with the ability to communicate progress, risks, and tradeoffs clearly.
- Experience participating in design reviews, code reviews, and mentoring less-experienced engineers.
- Excellent collaboration skills and ability to work effectively with cross-functional technical and operational teams.
- Knowledge of blockchain, cryptocurrency mining, energy systems, industrial telemetry, SCADA, or infrastructure operations is a plus but not required.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience building backend systems for operational intelligence, monitoring, automation, infrastructure management, or internal platforms.
- Experience with high-volume telemetry, time-series data, event-driven architectures, streaming systems, or real-time operational workflows.
- Experience integrating backend systems with data pipelines, analytics platforms, industrial systems, or edge infrastructure.
- Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, message queues, caching layers, and modern deployment practices.
- Experience improving production reliability through observability, testing, automation, and incident remediation.
- Experience working on systems that support mining operations, energy markets, data centers, industrial controls, or large-scale infrastructure.
