Job Description

Overview of the Role

Major, Lindsey & Africa’s Interim Legal Talent group is seeking a Temporary Part-Time Autonomous Vehicle Regulatory Counsel for an AV Company. This role requires an Attorney with 5-8+ years of experience in AV Regulatory Experience, with a strong emphasis on AI and Commercial Contracts.

The successful candidate will be instrumental in navigating complex U.S. autonomous vehicle regulations, providing critical legal guidance, and supporting commercial and compliance initiatives for a leading AV Company.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead U.S. AV regulatory compliance efforts, focusing on NHTSA / DOT guidelines.
  • Define the regulatory treatment of autonomous driving systems, distinguishing between device/kit and complete vehicle.
  • Develop and implement recall strategies, ensure recall readiness, and manage regulatory responses.
  • Establish safety risk frameworks, risk matrices, and assess vehicle operability for critical safety functions.
  • Minimize reliance on external counsel by translating complex regulations into actionable guidance for engineering teams.

Broader Commercial & Compliance Support

  • Provide targeted legal support for supply chain-related contracts and regulatory issues.
  • Assist with commercial agreements integral to AV deployments.
  • Manage data privacy and data governance matters relevant to AV operations and fleet data.
  • Proactively identify and strategically escalate potential issues rather than reacting to them.

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree and Attorney in Good Standing in at least one U.S. State.
  • At least 5-8 years of dedicated experience in Regulatory Compliance.
  • Demonstrated background as a former NHTSA / DOT attorney or regulator, or an AV company regulatory/compliance lead, or an automaker regulatory counsel with significant AV exposure.
  • Possess a practical, business-oriented temperament.
  • Deep familiarity with U.S. vehicle safety regulations and recall processes.
  • Comfortable collaborating directly with engineering and safety teams.

Preferred Qualifications
