Clinical Pharmacist – Night Shift Emergency Medicine

Maine Medical Center is seeking a Clinical Pharmacist to join their Emergency Medicine team on the night shift. This is a professional clinical role within Maine's only Level 1 Trauma Center, serving over 70,000 patients annually in high-acuity settings. The Emergency Department Clinical Pharmacist is an essential member of the multidisciplinary care team, providing expert pharmaceutical care to a diverse patient population including adults, geriatrics, and pediatrics.

About the Role

Under the general direction of the Director of Clinical Pharmacy Services, the Night Shift Emergency Medicine Clinical Pharmacist will practice at the top of their license. This involves managing non-critical and critically ill patients, collaborating with physicians, advanced practice providers, and nursing staff to ensure comprehensive, evidence-based care. The role also requires flexibility to support broader operational needs.

This position demands strong clinical judgment and the ability to prioritize effectively in a fast-paced environment. Key responsibilities include order verification, active participation in medical and trauma resuscitation, stroke alerts, sterile medication compounding, real-time pharmacologic therapy optimization, and educating students, nurses, residents, and providers.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in emergency code responses.
  • Review, verify, and optimize medication therapy for urgent, emergent, and critical care patients, considering the developmental age of the individual.
  • Prepare and mix pharmaceutical products according to USP 797 immediate use compounding standards.
  • Provide consultative services to promote appropriate evidence-based medication selections.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary caregivers to monitor, assess, recommend changes to, and optimize medication use.
  • Offer drug information consultation to emergency medicine providers, nurses, and other clinicians.
  • Engage in stewardship initiatives specific to the emergency department.
  • Participate in ongoing quality improvement and quality management initiatives.
  • Provide health literacy-sensitive education to patients and caregivers on medication use, disease management, and prevention.
  • Assist in precepting students, residents, and other learners.
  • Develop training experiences and competencies in collaboration with clinical staff.
  • Practice in accordance with state and federal laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities (KSAs)

  • Education: Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy or PharmD degree from a recognized/accredited school or college of pharmacy.
  • License/Certifications: Current applicable state(s) license with the Board of Pharmacy.
  • Experience: Previous pharmacist experience preferred.
