Job Summary
Emergency Medicine Clinical Pharmacists are integral members of the multidisciplinary care team, responsible for providing expertise in high-acuity settings. As Maine’s only Level 1 Trauma Center, our emergency department cares for more than 70,000 patients annually, across a spectrum of emergent and critical illnesses.
Under the general direction of the Director of Clinical Pharmacy Services, or their designee, the Per Diem Emergency Medicine Clinical Pharmacist practices at the top of their license, managing a diverse population of critically ill adult, geriatric, and pediatric patients. The pharmacist collaborates closely with physicians, advanced practice providers, and nursing colleagues to deliver comprehensive evidence-based care to a unique variety of adult, geriatric and pediatric patients, with flexibility to support broader operational needs as required.
This role demands strong clinical judgement and the ability to prioritize competing demands in a fast-paced environment. In addition to order verification, responsibilities include active participation in medical and trauma resuscitation and stroke alerts; preparation of medications using sterile techniques; real-time optimization of pharmacologic therapy; and ongoing education of students, nurses, residents and providers.
Responsibilities
- Participate in emergency code responses.
- Review, verify, and optimize medication therapy for urgent, emergent and critical care patients, demonstrating an understanding of the functional/developmental age of the individual served.
- Prepare and/or mix pharmaceutical products in accordance with USP 797 immediate use compounding standards.
- Provide consultative services that foster appropriate evidence-based medication selections.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary care givers to monitor, assess, recommend changes to and optimize medication use.
- Provide drug information consultation to emergency medicine providers, nurses and other clinicians requesting clinical pharmacy services in the emergency department.
- Engage in stewardship initiatives relevant to the emergency department.
- Participate in ongoing quality improvement activities and quality management initiatives.
- Provide health literacy-sensitive education to patients and caregivers regarding medication use, disease-state management and prevention strategies.
- Assist in precepting students, residents and other learners.
- Develop training experiences and competencies in collaboration with other clinical staff.
- Practice in accordance with state and federal laws, rules and regulations.
- Perform other related duties as required.

Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)
- Education: The Clinical Pharmacist role reviews medication orders for safe and effective medication use; collaborates with physicians and other health care personnel to achieve optimal patient outcomes; and formulates recommendations based on current literature and evidence-based practice.
- License/Certifications: Current applicable state(s) license with Board of Pharmacy required.
- Experience: Previous pharmacist experience preferred.
