About Magic Leap

Magic Leap is a pioneer in spatial computing, developing groundbreaking augmented reality technology that merges digital content with the real world. As the creator of the next computing platform, their mixed reality devices unlock new interaction possibilities.

Role Overview

The Principal Optical Scientist - Waveguide Design will drive innovation in optical component-level technology for next-generation Mixed Reality experiences with a focus on designing custom waveguides. This role involves cross-functional collaboration with waveguide manufacturing, materials, optical systems engineering, and metrology teams.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead a cutting-edge experimental optics lab bridging nanostructure fabrication and waveguide performance.
  • Define the strategic vision and technical roadmap for experimental optical characterization.
  • Architect and oversee custom optical experiment development and test methodologies.
  • Spearhead correlations of nano-metrology data with macro-scale optical performance metrics.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams and drive data analysis using statistical and AI-assisted methods.
  • Mentor staff scientists, engineers, and research specialists.
  • Clearly communicate experimental findings and technical insights to technical and executive stakeholders.

The Experience You Bring

A PhD in Optical Engineering, Physics, Electrical Engineering, or related field, or equivalent experience in optical systems design is required. 10+ years of experience in experimental optics, photonics research, or optical systems characterization with a focus on waveguides, diffractive optics, or nanophotonics is needed.

Proven leadership in R&D, expertise in optical metrology techniques, hands-on experience with custom optical test setups, and proficiency in Python or MATLAB are essential. Experience in cross-disciplinary collaboration and a track record of driving experimental innovations is highly valued.

It’s Exciting If You Also Have

  • Experience with diffractive waveguides and AR/MR display optics.
  • Familiarity with test coupon characterization.
  • Knowledge of machine vision and AI-enhanced metrology.
  • Hands-on cleanroom-based fabrication experience.
  • Background in computational electromagnetics and optical simulation.
  • A track record of filed patents or published research.
