Senior Scientist – Coastal Inundation Modeling

This role supports the NBS Development Team at NOAA’s Office of Coast Survey, developing and enhancing software workflows for bathymetric data ingestion, validation, and distribution.

Responsibilities

The Scientific Programmer will:

• Design and code software tools for NBS workflows.
• Automate data ingestion, deconfliction, and QC processes.
• Implement scripts and APIs for managing bathymetric data.
• Collaborate with NOAA scientists and GIS specialists.
• Document code and contribute to operational playbooks.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have:

• BS/BA in Computer Science, Oceanography, or related field.
• 6+ years of related experience.
• Proficiency in programming languages (Python, JavaScript; Fortran/Matlab is a plus).
• Experience with geospatial data formats (netCDF, HDF5, BAG, shapefiles).
• Familiarity with NOAA hydrographic standards.
• Strong problem-solving and documentation skills.
