The Role
Join Lumen as a Summer Intern on the AI Governance team. In this role, you will gain hands-on experience implementing enterprise-wide AI governance strategies aligned with the NIST AI Risk Management Framework and ISO 42001 standards. You will support evaluation of AI systems for fairness, transparency, and accountability, refine governance policies, and translate complex regulations into operational practices.
Main Responsibilities
- Support implementation of Lumen’s AI governance strategy per NIST RMF and ISO 42001 standards.
- Assist in evaluating AI systems for fairness, transparency, and accountability.
- Help refine AI governance policies, standards, and procedures.
- Translate legislative and regulatory requirements into operational guidelines.
- Identify and document AI-specific risks and controls for compliance.
- Research emerging AI policy trends and synthesize implications for the team.
- Promote AI governance awareness across technical and legal teams.
- Collaborate with data privacy and security teams to meet legal and internal standards.
- Focus on identifying, classifying, and mitigating algorithmic and infrastructure security risks.
- Work with MLOps and LLMOps teams for Security-by-Design and monitor AI projects.
Candidate Requirements
Applicants must be enrolled in a 4-year college/university as a rising senior, with expected graduation between August 2026 and May 2028. Preferred fields include Computer Science, Public Policy, Data Science, Law, Ethics, or related disciplines. The internship requires 40 hours per week over a 10-week period (June 1 – August 6, 2065) and U.S. Citizenship.
Work Setting & Compensation
Interns must work 30-40 hours per week with reliable transportation to the work location. Compensation is hourly ranging from $31 to $46, based on education level and qualifications.
