Job Description

Staff Engineer - Digital Services at lululemon

Lululemon is an innovative performance apparel company focused on yoga, running, training, and other athletic pursuits. We set the bar in technical fabrics and functional design, creating transformational products and experiences that support people in moving, growing, connecting, and being well. Our success is built on innovative products, emphasis on stores, commitment to our people, and strong community connections. We are dedicated to creating positive change, fostering a healthier future, and building an equitable, inclusive, and growth-focused environment for our team members.

About This Team

We are actively seeking a Staff Engineer, Digital Services to provide profound technical leadership across our Digital Services organization. This role is crucial for powering our Content, Search, Catalog, Recommendations, Product Detail Pages (PDP), and SEO platforms and APIs. As a highly influential and hands-on leader, you will be responsible for shaping scalable, resilient, and high-performance systems that deliver best-in-class digital commerce and discovery experiences.

Core Responsibilities

As a Staff Engineer, you will serve as the technical leader for the platform(s) delivered by your team. Your expertise will be vital in your technology space, contributing to all aspects of development and operations, from pre-production through to production. A significant portion of your time will involve planning the evolution of tools and systems within your platform, guiding your team’s roadmap year to year. You will heavily contribute to our Engineering principles by maintaining practical ‘how-we-do-it’ documentation and partnering with Senior Leadership and Principal Engineers to lead a Community of Practice. This community aims to enhance Engineer training and development for your specific technology stack. Staff Engineers at lululemon work to elevate our engineering community by designing and introducing tools and systems that accelerate and support our engineering best practices.

  • Define and evolve service-oriented and API-first architectures with a strong emphasis on scalability, reliability, low latency, and extensibility.
  • Drive system design reviews, architectural governance, and technical decision-making across multiple teams.
  • Lead the design of content, catalog publishing, and merchandising platforms, facilitating rapid, accurate, and scalable product launches across various regions and channels.
  • Architect comprehensive end-to-end catalog publishing pipelines, encompassing ingestion, enrichment, validation, transformation, and distribution to downstream consumers such as Search, Category, PDP, SEO, and external partners.
  • Drive the design of workflow-driven publishing capabilities, including approvals, role-based access control, preview environments, scheduling, rollback, and auditability.
  • Partner closely with Product Managers, UX, Data, Platform, and Infrastructure teams to translate complex business needs into robust technical solutions.
  • Facilitate an Engineering Community of Practice for your platform.
  • Contribute to engineering automation, management, or development of production-level systems.
  • Own the entire delivery lifecycle for your selected platform.
  • Collaborate with Architecture, Security, and Operations throughout the product development lifecycle.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of professional software engineering experience, including designing and operating large-scale distributed systems.
  • Strong hands-on experience building and operating backend services and APIs in a cloud-native environment.
  • Proven experience with Search, Browse, Category, PDP, or SEO-related platforms within a retail or eCommerce ecosystem.
  • Deep understanding of system design, scalability, performance optimization, and reliability engineering.
  • Strong proficiency in at least one backend programming language (Java, Node.js, Python, etc.).
  • Experience with AWS (or other public cloud providers) and modern DevOps practices.
  • Ability to translate complex business problems into clear, maintainable technical solutions.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence without authority and lead across multiple teams.

At lululemon, we believe in:

  • Acknowledging the presence of choice in every moment and taking personal responsibility for your life.
  • Possessing an entrepreneurial spirit and continuously innovating to achieve great results.
  • Communicating with honesty and kindness, creating space for others to do the same.
  • Leading with courage, understanding that the possibility of greatness outweighs the fear of failure.
  • Fostering connection by prioritizing people and building trusting relationships.
  • Integrating fun and joy into your way of being and working, without taking yourself too seriously.
