About the role
About the Role
We’re seeking talented DevOps, Site Reliability Engineers, or Platform Engineers who want to join us to build an outstanding observability team. You will use your experience and technological skills to help us build a centralized observability team. The role involves collaborating with development teams to instrument services, promoting standard methodologies for observability, and improving product quality and performance. You will work alongside various leadership, development, product managers, and operations teams to bring insight from observability data to drive customer experience improvement.
Our key principle is "Measure What Matters", specifically, what matters to our customers. Measuring infrastructure is less meaningful to customers than measuring whether our services are available, fast enough, or reliable enough. This can be implemented through tracing, real user monitoring, synthetic tests, metrics collection, and SLOs, all in terms of customer impact. Measuring infrastructure has a place but is secondary and should drive avoidance or recovery activities.
Responsibilities
- Develop and standardize observability platforms: Build and standardize implementations for logging, metrics, and tracing to ensure insight into system health.
- Promote guidelines: Advocate for and help establish observability standards and guidelines across the organization.
- Collaborate and mentor: Partner with other engineering teams and mentor engineers to improve their understanding of observability tools and practices.
- Instrument applications and services: Work with engineers to add telemetry to applications, using techniques like distributed tracing and structured logging.
- Develop dashboards and alerts: Build dashboards to visualize system data and configure automated alerting to proactively detect issues.
- Automate infrastructure: Use tools like Terraform and Ansible to automate the provisioning and configuration of observability infrastructure.
- Improve system performance: Analyze performance data to identify bottlenecks and optimize system reliability and performance.
- Analyze telemetry data during incidents to help identify root causes and reduce Mean Time to Recovery (MTTR).
- Work under direction of leadership, detailing the business requirements and specifications vital to acquire and implement solutions.
Skills And Qualifications
- Expertise within various Monitoring/Observability tools such as DataDog, BigPanda.
- Expertise configuring and testing Monitoring and/or Observability platforms with IaaS, such as Terraform, CloudFormation, Ansible, Puppet.
- Expertise with CI/CD development pipelines such as GitLab, Jenkins, GitHub, or similar development tools.
- Expertise with implementing and maintaining monitoring platforms such as Azure Monitor, AWS CloudWatch, Prometheus, Grafana.
- Experience operating, crafting, and building large scale enterprise/production grade systems.
- Experience with Agile practices and tooling such as Daily standup, Retrospective, Kanban, Scrum, Jira.
