About the City of New York Department of Correction

The New York City Department of Correction (DOC) is an integral part of the City’s evolving criminal justice system, participating in reform initiatives and strategies aimed to move the City towards a smaller jail system without compromising public safety. The DOC is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for our employees, visitors, volunteers, and people in our custody. Importantly, safe jails enable DOC to provide people in custody with the tools and opportunities they need to successfully re-enter their communities. The DOC operates facilities and court commands across the five boroughs with more than 7,500 diverse professionals and knowledgeable experts.

Investigator Role Overview

The New York City Department of Correction (DOC) Applicant Investigation Unit (AIU) is seeking (5) part-time Investigators to perform a critical role in conducting comprehensive background investigations of Correction Officer candidates. Under general supervision, with considerable latitude for independent judgment, Investigators will utilize a combination of traditional investigative methods and advanced digital research techniques to evaluate candidate suitability. Responsibilities include conducting investigative interviews; performing field visits; reviewing digital forums, identifying undisclosed information; verifying the authenticity of submitted documentation; and conducting research through authorized databases and internet-based sources. Investigators will analyze information for indicators relevant to departmental standards, prepare detailed and accurate investigative reports and maintain investigative records with strict adherence to confidentiality requirements. The ideal candidate will be highly organized, detail-oriented, technologically proficient, and capable of exercising sound judgment while supporting the AIU’s mission to ensure the integrity and effectiveness of the Correction Officer hiring process.

Key Responsibilities of an Investigator

  • Conduct comprehensive background and pre-employment investigations for Correction Officer candidates and other personnel.
  • Coordinate, track, and manage investigative assignments and schedules to ensure timely completion of cases.
  • Conduct investigative interviews with candidates and relevant collateral contacts.
  • Gather, analyze, and verify information obtained through interviews, field visits, digital sources, and database research.
  • Perform background checks using internal and external systems, including EJustice, IIS, IFCOM, WebCrims, public databases, and other authorized investigative resources.
  • Review and analyze digital content, forums, and platforms inconsistent with departmental standards.
  • Identify and investigate digital identities associated with targeted individuals.
  • Verify the authenticity and legitimacy of submitted documents through cross-checks and investigative validation.
  • Conduct investigative research using internet sources, watchdog registries, and database records.
  • Perform field visits to businesses, residences, communities, and other relevant locations as required.
  • Prepare detailed, accurate, and comprehensive investigative reports documenting findings and conclusions.
  • Maintain investigative files, digital content, and records in accordance with confidentiality, legal, and departmental requirements.
  • Exercise discretion and strict confidentiality throughout all phases of the investigative process.
  • Work collaboratively with investigative counterparts and supervisors within the AIU and related units.
  • Assist with special projects and perform related duties as assigned.

  • Ability to exercise discretion, maintain confidentiality, and adhere to departmental policies and the chain of command.

Residency Requirement

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County. To determine if the residency requirement applies to you, please discuss with the agency representative at the time of interview.

Qualifications

  • A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and four years of satisfactory full-time experience in one or more of the fields of accounting, auditing, correction administration, criminal justice administration and planning, forensic science, inspection, investigation, law enforcement, personnel administration, police science, and security, or in a major operational area of the agency in which the appointment is to be made; or
  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college; or
  • Education and/or experience equivalent to the above.
