Job Overview

APTIM is seeking an Entry Level Environmental Scientist on a full-time basis in the Sacramento, CA area to primarily support solid waste composition assessments of client waste containers. These assessments typically last 1-2 days with team sizes ranging from 2 to 5 members, depending on the assessment's scope.

Assessment work activities include sorting through solid waste using hand tools to segregate items by type for assessing plastics, paper, cardboard, glass, food waste, and regulated materials. This involves assisting with waste separation, weighing, and inventorying items for data analysis and reporting.

The role requires the ability to bend and lift 30 pounds or less, willingness to work in Tyvek safety suits, wear required safety equipment, and stand for up to 8 hours. As experience is gained, motivated candidates can become Team Leads and/or take on additional responsibilities coordinating assessment work and preparing related documentation for various clients.

Successful candidates may also participate in other environmental compliance support tasks, such as hazardous waste, hazardous materials, aboveground storage tanks, spill prevention, and DOT and RCRA compliance. Experience supporting an environmental team is beneficial.

Key Responsibilities/Accountabilities

Waste Composition Assessments
  • Sort solid waste into material categories including plastics, paper, cardboard, food waste, regulated waste, etc.
  • Use hand tools to sort waste and lift/move items 30 pounds or less.
  • Willingness to travel with the team to transfer stations, landfills, and client sites. Travel could be required anywhere in the continental US, but the primary focus is in CA.
  • Through experience, take on additional responsibilities including Team Lead, coordination of multiple assessments, and/or documentation of assessment results.
Other Environmental Compliance Tasks
  • Execute various work scopes while meeting project schedules and budgets.
  • Work independently and as part of a project team, adapting to changing conditions.
  • Work as a team member and/or team lead to assist in preparation of regulatory reports and permit applications.
  • Interface with client personnel at both corporate and facility levels.
  • Manage time to ensure quality products are prepared to meet project deadlines.
  • Apply knowledge and skills to a wide range of standard and nonstandard situations.
  • Follow defined processes explicitly while also identifying and accommodating new or changing scenarios, and developing processes for new activities.

Basic Qualifications

  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screen.
  • Bachelor's degree in a core science (such as geology, chemistry, physics, or biology), engineering, environmental science, or related area required.
  • Related work experience of 1-2 years desired.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong computer skills required, including demonstrated strength in Microsoft applications such as MS Excel, MS Word, SharePoint Online, and the ability to learn other software applications.
  • Willing to work in the field and travel to complete work.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience or training regarding environmental compliance and related federal and state environmental regulations desirable.
  • 40-Hour HAZWOPER trained.

Physical Requirements

The role involves:

  • Strength: Standing (50%), Walking (20%), Sitting (30%), Lifting (35 lb.), Carrying (35 lb.).
  • Other activities (Occasionally - 0-33%): Climbing, Balancing, Stooping, Kneeling, Crouching, Crawling, Reaching.
  • Handling and Fingering (Constantly - 67-100%).
