We hire exceptional talent nationwide and offer flexible remote work arrangements.

Primary Purpose of the Public Health Data Analyst III Role

The Public Health Data Analyst III provides critical consulting, analytics, testing, training, and development services to support the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN). This role involves developing and implementing novel digital quality measures (dQMs) for hospitals and other healthcare settings, leveraging analytical skills and public-health knowledge to deliver actionable insights for clients.

Key Responsibilities for a Successful Candidate

  • Access and analyze complex data from various sources.
  • Conduct analyses in Python; interpret, summarize, and present findings to relevant stakeholders, including technical, clinical, and product teams.
  • Perform clinical and operational data analyses using HL7® FHIR®-based data.
  • Execute data-quality checks, develop materials, review documentation, troubleshoot issues, and report results related to FHIR–EHR mapping, patient-identity matching, encounter reconciliation, and clinical-data standardization using HL7 FHIR and other healthcare terminologies.
  • Manipulate datasets and perform quality checks on analytic deliverables.
  • Collaborate to plan, develop, and implement projects and materials.
  • Communicate analytic advice and statistical methodology to clients, management, and staff.
  • Analyze and understand client needs and translate them into formal requirements.
  • Provide results to the project team and clients both verbally and in writing, in technical language or plain language as appropriate for the audience.
  • Test application(s) and provide feedback to software developers and quality-assurance technicians.
  • Maintain public-health expertise and stay abreast of industry changes and trends.
  • Develop and deliver trainings, project updates, and presentations on NHSN work.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and at least nine (9) years of relevant experience in statistics, epidemiology, public health, or a related field; or Master’s degree and at least seven (7) years of relevant experience.
  • Extensive experience using Python to import data, manipulate data and data sets, and conduct analyses regarding evaluation of data quality and accuracy.
  • Proven experience managing large datasets, moving and merging files from different platforms, cleaning and aggregating data, and performing quality control.
  • Experience with quality-assurance testing or user-acceptance testing involving healthcare data.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail and strong critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust Level 5 clearance.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in epidemiology, public health, biostatistics, mathematics, or a related field.
  • Experience using SAS or R.
  • Knowledge of and/or experience with real-world HL7 FHIR resource analysis and mapping, including normalization and standardization of clinical data.
  • Experience with EHR-vendor (such as Epic, Cerner, or Meditech) data-model interpretation and healthcare data sets, including standards for healthcare terminology (such as ICD/CPT, LOINC, SNOMED, and RxNorm) and clinical concepts related to quality metrics and patient safety.
  • Knowledge of and/or experience with big-data large-dataset analysis, including matching patient identity across clinical systems, encounter reconciliation, longitudinal record construction, and cross-system data linkage and deduplication data reconciliation.
  • Knowledge of and/or experience with electronic health records and clinical-workflow concepts.
  • Knowledge of and/or experience with pharmaceutical, public-health, regulatory, or healthcare-delivery domains.
