About the Role
As an Applied Scientist - Hardware at KoBold Metals, you will design, develop, and deploy advanced instruments to collect critical exploration data. You will simulate, characterize, and calibrate sensor performance while designing novel data acquisition systems. Collaborating with vendors, partners, and operations staff, you will deploy hardware in the field for mineral exploration and discovery.
Technical Execution
You will be responsible for:
- Designing and developing new mineral exploration data collection instruments
- Developing proprietary software exploration tools
- Curating mixed data types: geospectral, geophysical, geochemical, geologic, and geographic
- Building predictive models for ore-grade mineralization in 2D and 3D
- Creating effective visualizations for model performance evaluation
- Applying physics-based, statistical, and data processing methods to geoscience data
- Collaborating with data scientists, geoscientists, and engineers to deploy advanced algorithms
- Presenting findings to external partners and stakeholders
Qualifications
- Ability to rapidly absorb and synthesize complex information
- Exceptional curiosity and eagerness to learn
- Proven track record with complex hardware development alongside cross-disciplinary teams
Technical Skills
- Physical measurement and data analysis systems
- Emerging technology prototyping and systems integration
- Python data science packages and software engineering best practices
- Collaborative development (git), unit testing, and CICD pipelines
- SQL and familiarity with non-relational databases
- Cloud computing expertise
- Predictive modeling, applied statistics, and physics analysis
- Experience in deploying sensors in the field
Work Practices & Motivation
You will be expected to take ownership of large projects, work directly with geologists in the field, and communicate effectively with non-technical stakeholders. Strong initiative, clear prioritization, and a proactive approach to solving challenging problems are key.
