Our rapidly growing Industrial Design Group is a multi-faceted and leading-edge division of Kiewit, known for its best-in-class technical expertise. This group, encompassing process, electrical, controls, structural, architectural, geotechnical, and civil disciplines, focuses on EPC and design-build delivery of industrial projects in sectors such as Food & Beverage, Consumer Products, Heavy Manufacturing, Industrial Buildings, Industrial Water, and Utilities. We have specialized expertise in plant floor process design, packaging, refrigerated/frozen facility design, and ammonia refrigeration systems.
Location
This position is based in Calgary, AB, with the potential for occasional travel to some of our US-based offices.
Responsibilities
- Evaluate, select, and apply engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria for designing medium to large industrial projects.
- Formulate technical specifications and prepare interface points with construction partners.
- Schedule, review, and coordinate design efforts with project personnel, performing bid evaluations of equipment and construction proposals, and developing recommendations for contract award.
- Prepare electrical engineering designs, including layout, design schematics, calculations, and conceptual designs, utilizing standard methods and project principles.
- Mentor and guide junior engineers, maintaining a comprehensive understanding of departmental design standards, applicable engineering codes, and Kiewit guidelines, providing suggestions as needed.
- Work independently on small projects or as part of a large multi-discipline team on larger projects, collaborating with in-house inter-discipline engineers and construction partners.
- Prepare electrical engineering deliverables such as one-lines, layout, design schematics, wiring diagrams, equipment data sheets, hazardous area classification drawings, and various electrical power studies.
- Perform complex calculations and apply standards correctly without supervision.
- Perform ETAP analysis and simulation, system modeling, protection coordination, reliability studies, load flow studies, and grounding integrity.
- Utilize SmartPlant for balance of plant electrical systems design.
- Support RFP, Pre-Feed, FEED, D/B, and EPC projects for electrical designs across multiple markets.
- For more Senior candidates, may lead projects and other engineers.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering.
- P.Eng is required.
- Minimum of 8+ years’ experience performing Electrical engineering design for Industrial facilities (e.g., Chemical plants, Mining/Mineral Processing, Power, Water/Wastewater, Processing plants, Advanced manufacturing, Data Centers, EV Battery, petrochemical).
- Experience with ETAP Electrical Power System Analysis Software (or similar tool) for simulation/analysis is required.
- Demonstrated interest in leading small projects and teams.
- Experience mentoring less experienced engineers.
- Experience working with a project team and other stakeholders in engineering, procurement, and construction.
- Experience with SmartPlant, Microstation, or REVIT for designing electrical systems or I&C systems in an industrial facility.
- Ability to develop and present work in a well-constructed manner, with excellent verbal communication skills and a collaborative approach to design and problem-solving.
- Experience with FEED, D/B, EPC designs, familiar with 30/60/90% completion design progression.
- Experience with power system studies, relay coordination, short circuit load flow, protection, and arc flash for low to medium power systems.
- Experience with industry codes, guidelines, and standards related to the Electrical discipline.
- Self-directed and able to work with limited to no supervision.
