Production Engineer - Controls and Automation at JTEKT North America

JTEKT North America, a global leader in automotive systems and high-performance machine tools, is expanding its Piedmont plant in 2025, integrating over 120 new machines and automation systems. As a Control Engineer, you will design, program, and optimize advanced automation systems using cutting-edge technology.

Summary & Purpose

You will be the go-to expert for programming PLC/SCADA/HMI systems, integrating robotics and vision systems, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to improve production processes.

Essential Duties and Accountabilities

  • Architect and program PLC/SCADA/HMI systems using Mitsubishi, Allen-Bradley, and Fanuc PMC platforms.
  • Integrate Fanuc robotics and Keyence vision/laser systems for automated inspection.
  • Collaborate with Process Engineering, Quality, and Corporate PE teams for automation cell deployment and new product launches.
  • Lead root-cause analyses to resolve technical issues and reduce downtime.
  • Utilize data analytics (OEE, SPC) to drive performance improvements.
  • Design tooling, fixtures, and gauging for repeatable manufacturing processes.
  • Commission and validate new equipment ensuring quality standards.
  • Maintain engineering documentation in support of APQP and PPAP requirements.
  • Support safety, 5S initiatives, and mentor teams during troubleshooting.
  • Work overtime as needed to support production and urgent troubleshooting.

Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Proficient in PLC/HMI programming and SCADA system integration with experience in Fanuc robotics and Keyence vision systems. Strong troubleshooting skills, ability to read electrical schematics, and expertise in data-driven performance improvements are required. Familiarity with Lean, Six Sigma, TPS, and quality standards (IATF 16949) is essential.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering (Electrical, Mechatronics, Automation or related field) or equivalent experience.
  • 3+ years in automotive or high-volume manufacturing environments.
  • 3+ years in electrical and controls design, programming and troubleshooting.

Work Environment/Physical Demands

Working in a manufacturing environment with the use of personal protective equipment. Physical tasks include standing, bending, lifting up to 40 lbs, and operating machinery like forklifts or scissor lifts.
