Lockheed Martin (MFC) is seeking a Materials Engineering Intern to support the Orlando, FL site. The engineer will be working in the Applied Research optical-materials lab.
This internship offers a hands-on, immersive experience in a research environment where cutting-edge optical-device technologies are developed for aerospace and defense applications. The intern will work side-by-side with senior scientists and engineers, assisting with the micro- and nano-scale fabrication of optical components. In addition to fabrication work, the role involves extensive material-characterization activities that span optical, structural, and mechanical domains.
Typical Tasks and Responsibilities
- Measuring transmission and reflection spectra.
- Performing Raman spectroscopy characterization.
- Conducting scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) for morphology and compositional analysis.
- Evaluating scattering behavior of fabricated components.
- Participating in mechanical or environmental testing as needed.
- Meticulously recording, processing, and visualizing data using tools such as MATLAB, Python, or Excel.
- Communicating results through clear technical reports and internal presentations.
- Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to troubleshoot fabrication challenges and refine test procedures.
- Ensuring all work adheres to Lockheed Martin's rigorous safety and data-integrity standards.
This experience provides valuable exposure to the full product-development lifecycle, from material selection and prototype fabrication to performance validation and documentation.
Basic Qualifications
- Candidate must be pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Material science, Mechanical engineering, Optical Engineering, or a related discipline, from an accredited university.
- Familiarity with material science, specifically related to optical/infrared materials, including optical, structural, and mechanical properties.
Desired Skills
