Hiring Company: ION Water
One-liner: ION transforms the way water costs are controlled through affordable housing’s only smart End-to-End Water Management solution. The Software Architect will own the data architecture and lead a distributed engineering team to ensure data correctness and high-quality code for the ION platform.
Salary: $150K/yr - $170K/yr
Why Join Us:
• End-to-end smart water management platform transforming how multifamily housing controls water costs, with 20,000x more granular data than traditional meters
• Partnered with Meta on a 26M gallon conservation initiative, 100K+ units deployed, trusted by 1/3 of top U.S. affordable housing developers
• Remote-first environment with competitive compensation and benefits.
Role Responsibilities
• Own the data architecture and correctness of the ION platform — relational and time-series modeling, reconciliation, and the integrity of high-volume meter data
• Lead and mentor a distributed engineering team, and raise the quality bar without adding unnecessary process
• Set and document architecture direction across the stack — serverless backend, data products, and the React / Next.js front end
• Build and ship production backend code in TypeScript and Node.js
• Make pragmatic build-versus-buy and storage decisions based on scale, reliability, maintainability, and cost
• Improve testing, observability, code review, and deployment discipline across the team
• Partner with Product, Operations, Sales, and the CTO to turn business requirements into technical plans
Qualifications
Required
• Data-first engineer: deep in relational data modeling and SQL performance tuning at scale on a major relational database (PostgreSQL, Oracle, SQL Server, or MySQL)
• Experience ensuring data correctness, including reconciling internal systems against an external source of truth
• Experience with time-series or high-volume operational data — or strong relational depth and the ability to ramp into it
• 5+ years building production backend, data, or cloud systems; 3+ years in a senior technical role (Architect, Staff / Principal Engineer, or hands-on Engineering Lead)
• Demonstrated experience leading and mentoring engineers on a distributed team
• Deep AWS serverless experience (Lambda, SQS / SNS, S3, DynamoDB, IAM, VPC) and infrastructure-as-code
• Strong TypeScript / Node.js — or comparable backend depth and the ability to become productive quickly
• Comfortable reasoning about and reviewing a React / Next.js front end
• Strong grasp of idempotency, retries, dead-letter handling, ordering, backfills, and incident response
Preferred
• PostgreSQL and TimescaleDB (our current stack)
• MQTT or other device / IoT telemetry experience at scale
• Utility, energy, water, building-operations, or billing domains
• Anomaly detection, signal processing, or time-series analytics
• S3-based analytics — Athena, Glue, Parquet
• Docker, ECS / Fargate, ECR, and CI/CD pipelines
• TypeScript / Node.js
• PostgreSQL / TimescaleDB
• MQTT / IoT telemetry
• React / Next.js familiarity
