Senior Lab Animal Veterinarian Technician
Jefferson Health is seeking a highly skilled Senior Veterinary Technician (SVT) to provide comprehensive technical and clinical support for a diverse range of laboratory animal species, including rodents, rabbits, and swine. This role is crucial in training research and animal care staff on essential technical skills and involves leading the rodent import and export program, ensuring all animal shipments comply with institutional and regulatory requirements. The SVT will also manage inventory, order veterinary supplies, coordinate equipment maintenance, and process billing for veterinary services.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide extensive pre, peri, and post-operative support for laboratory animals, including anesthesia induction, monitoring, complication triage, and post-surgical care under veterinarian supervision.
- Train research and animal care staff on fundamental technical skills such as animal handling, restraint, injections, blood collection, anesthesia, and euthanasia.
- Maintain and provide training on in-house veterinary equipment, including radiograph machines, anesthetic machines, ventilators, pulse oximeters, and blood analyzers.
- Serve as the primary veterinary liaison between animal caretakers and veterinarians, triaging clinical cases, communicating assessments, providing stabilizing treatments, and administering medical care as directed.
- Lead the rodent import/export program by coordinating all aspects of animal shipments, ensuring compliance with all relevant regulations and institutional policies.
- Manage inventory and procurement of veterinary supplies and equipment, placing orders and submitting accurate charges for services and materials.
- Assist in the creation and updating of departmental Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
Qualifications
- Associate's or Bachelor's Degree in Animal Science or Biology.
- Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience.
- Certification as a Veterinary Technician (e.g., CVT, LVT, RVT) and/or AALAS certification as an LAT or LATG.
