Job Description

Assistant Professor, Nurse Anesthesia Program

This is a 10 hour/week Assistant Professor position within the Nurse Anesthesia Program at Jefferson College of Nursing, Thomas Jefferson University. In collaboration with the nurse anesthesia faculty and Program Administrator, the Assistant Professor assumes a beginning leadership role in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of curriculum and learning experiences for students across classroom, laboratory/simulation, and clinical settings. This role ensures alignment between the College's and University's mission and the educational goals of the nurse anesthesia program.

The Assistant Professor will also ensure congruence with standards established by key accreditation bodies such as the Council of Accreditation for Nurse Anesthesia Education Programs, American Association of Colleges of Nursing, Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, and the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing, in collaboration with the Program Director and faculty.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the Program Administrator and nurse anesthesia faculty to maintain a curriculum consistent with other advanced nurse practitioner programs within the College of Nursing and educational standards.
  • Organize the curriculum to ensure a logical sequence of teaching and learning, identify minimum clinical competencies for graduates, and participate in didactic teaching.
  • Maintain program, student, and clinical faculty records/files in collaboration with administrative support staff.
  • Administer anesthesia one day per week to maintain clinical expertise and provide clinical instruction to students at University-affiliated hospitals.
  • Participate in recruitment activities, including reviewing program applications and serving on the nurse anesthesia admissions selection committee.
  • Communicate effectively with personnel, students, course faculty, and staff.
  • Provide an environment conducive to student engagement, participation, and diversity.
  • Oversee student advisement and remediation.
  • Serve on College committees and demonstrate emerging leadership.
  • Mentor didactic and clinical faculty.
  • Represent the College in appropriate University activities and actively participate in professional organizations.
  • Contribute to the nursing profession through scholarly papers, presentations, and publications.
  • Utilize contemporary and innovative teaching methodologies in various settings.
  • Develop and begin to implement a scholarly agenda.
  • Participate in College and/or University Committees.
  • Participate in professional organizations at local, state, or national levels.
  • Interact with co-workers, visitors, and other staff consistent with the University's core values.

Position Qualifications

Educational/Training Requirements
  • Earned doctorate in nursing or an appropriate discipline from an accredited institution.
Certificates, Licenses, And Registration
  • Licensure to practice as a registered nurse in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
  • State Board of Nursing licensure for states where clinical assignments are performed.
  • National certification as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA).
  • Evidence of continuing education and professional memberships relevant to areas of expertise.
Experience Requirements
  • Academic appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor in a collegiate nursing program OR Two (2) years at the rank of Instructor at an accredited institution or equivalent experience.
  • Five (5) years full-time post-secondary teaching experience at an accredited institution OR Five (5) years full-time clinical experience OR a combination of the above.
  • Evidence of progressive leadership and academic responsibilities.
  • Evidence of effective teaching.
  • Demonstrated scholarly productivity, beyond doctoral dissertation, through professional literature contributions, presentations, and/or grantsmanship.
  • Participation in College and/or University Committees.
