Job Description
Position Summary
The Senior Tax Professional at Innovative Tax Relief is a subject-matter expert responsible for leading complex IRS resolution matters from analysis through final determination. This role is primarily focused on resolving federal and state tax liabilities through strategic negotiation, financial analysis, and direct representation before the IRS.
While the position requires the ability to prepare individual and business tax returns, tax resolution is the primary function and core performance metric of this role.
To ensure maximum focus on technical execution, Case Managers manage client communication, documentation follow-ups, and day-to-day relationship management. The Senior Tax Professional serves as the technical “engine” of the service department and works in close partnership with Case Managers to deliver sustainable, compliant outcomes.
Core Focus of the Role
This role is designed for a seasoned tax resolution professional whose primary expertise is in:
- IRS negotiations
- Payment plan structuring
- Collection defense
- Appeals and compliance remediation
- Complex liability resolution
Tax preparation supports resolution work and client compliance but is not the primary responsibility.
Essential Job Functions
Tax Resolution & Representation (Primary Responsibility)
- Lead and manage complex IRS resolution matters, including Installment Agreements, Partial Pay Installment Agreements, Offers in Compromise, CNC determinations, lien and levy releases, and appeals.
- Represent clients in direct negotiations with IRS departments, including ACS, Revenue Officers, OIC Units, and Appeals.
- Analyze financial documentation to determine optimal resolution strategies.
- Prepare, submit, and manage all technical resolution documentation and correspondence.
- Resolve escalated and high-risk enforcement cases.
- Monitor compliance and prevent defaults on negotiated agreements.
Tax Preparation & Compliance (Secondary Responsibility)
- Prepare and file accurate individual and business tax returns as required to support resolution efforts.
- Ensure all filings support long-term compliance and negotiated agreements.
- Review financial and tax records for accuracy and regulatory adherence.
Strategy, Advisory, & Internal Support
- Provide technical guidance to Case Managers regarding resolution strategy, financial positioning, and case risk.
- Identify tax-saving and compliance opportunities that improve client outcomes.
- Serve as an internal escalation resource for complex cases.
- Mentor Case Managers and junior staff on IRS procedures and resolution best practices.
Systems & Workflow
- Utilize Drake Software, Pitbull Tax, Salesforce, and Airtable to manage case workflows.
- Maintain detailed, audit-ready case documentation.
- Collaborate with internal bookkeeping staff and perform limited bookkeeping support when necessary (QuickBooks).
Required Skills/Abilities
- Certification: Enrolled Agent (EA) certification from the IRS, Tax Attorney designation, or a related professional tax qualification (CPA)
- Expertise: Advanced knowledge of IRS collection, resolution, and appeals procedures. Strong understanding of federal and state tax law. Demonstrated experience negotiating directly with the IRS
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in QuickBooks and professional tax software (Drake preferred), Pitbull Tax, Salesforce, Airtable and similar
- Analytical Thinking: Ability to interpret complex tax codes and apply them to diverse financial situations.
- Collaboration: Strong ability to work with Case Managers to ensure a seamless flow of information.
- Detail Oriented: Exceptional accuracy in documentation and financial calculations.
Other Details
- Status: Independent Contractor. Must possess an Employer Identification Number (EIN) or a registered Business Entity. A signed W-9 is required for 1099 reporting.
- Competitive salary.
- Commitment: Minimum of 20 hours per week.
- Billing: Invoices must be submitted for payment every two weeks. Every invoice must be accompanied by a detailed work log. Format will be provided.
- Location: 100% Remote (Monday – Friday).
