What is an Army General Service Recruit?

An Army General Service Recruit is an individual who enlists for General Service in the Irish Defence Forces. Upon successful completion of the initial training program, recruits are promoted to Private 2*. The Irish Defence Forces offers numerous career options across all Corps after the recruit training phase.

Eligible Requirements to join as an Army General Service Recruit:

To be considered for the General Service Recruit role, applicants must meet specific criteria:

  • Age: Must be between 18 and 39 years of age. Proof of age will be required if you advance in the selection process.
  • Height: A minimum height of 5ft 2in (157.48cm) is mandatory. Your height will be measured during the selection process.
  • Tattoos: No tattoos are permitted to be visible above the collar while serving with the Defence Forces. This will be checked, and visible tattoos above the collar may prevent you from proceeding.
  • Working Permit: Applicants must satisfy the working permit eligibility criteria to serve, requiring a minimum of 5 years eligibility to reside in Ireland. Proof of working permit will be requested with your application.
  • Standards: Must meet all medical, physical, and security clearance standards, which will be thoroughly assessed during the recruitment process.

What to expect as an Army General Service Recruit:

The recruit experience involves a structured training progression:

  • You will participate in a basic recruit training program lasting twelve weeks.
  • Following this, you will complete a twelve-week 3-star training course.
  • Depending on the Corps you join, you will have opportunities for various career and specialist courses.
  • Recruits may be required to complete training at any Defence Forces location and may be posted to any Defence Forces location post-training. While we strive to accommodate unit preferences, postings are subject to Defence Forces requirements.
  • You will be posted to a Unit within the Brigade you apply to (e.g., 1 Bde, 2 Bde, or DFTC).
  • Newly qualified Private Soldiers are encouraged to pursue further Army courses, which can lead to specialization, promotion, and eligibility for overseas service.
  • Upon qualification, recruits assume a position as a three-star private in one of the following Service Corps: Infantry, Artillery, Cavalry, Transport, Communications Information Systems, Engineers, Ordnance, Military Police, or Medical Corps.

Barrack locations: Cork, Dublin, Donegal, Galway, Kildare, Kilkenny, Limerick, Louth, Meath, Westmeath.
