Organizational Setting
The Department of Nuclear Safety and Security (NS) is responsible for formulating and implementing the IAEA's nuclear safety and security programme. This encompasses activities designed to protect people and the environment from radiation exposure and to meet Member States' needs related to nuclear safety and nuclear security.
The Division of Nuclear Security (NSNS) is tasked with establishing, coordinating, and implementing the IAEA's nuclear security program, upon request, to protect against, detect, and respond to nuclear security events and threats. NSNS comprises four Sections: Information Management, Nuclear Security of Materials Outside of Regulatory Control, Nuclear Security of Materials and Facilities, and Programme Development and International Cooperation.
The Programme Development and International Cooperation Section (PDIC) supports the overall planning and coordination of the Division's work. This includes managing the Nuclear Security Fund, evaluating results, handling financial matters, and interacting with and reporting to donors. PDIC is instrumental in developing and promoting nuclear security through IAEA guidance, advocating for relevant international legal instruments, and facilitating nuclear security working and advisory groups. The Section also aids Member States in nuclear security capacity building, coordinating and advising on strategy, methodology, and evaluation for the Division’s education and training programs. It coordinates two collaborative Networks for nuclear security education and training: INSEN for academic institutions and NSSCs for national Nuclear Security Support Centres.
Main Purpose
As a member of a team led by the Section Head, Programme Development and International Cooperation, the Associate Nuclear Security Officer (2026 ACPPNM Conference) will work with the Co-Scientific Secretaries of the 2026 Conference of the Parties to the ACPPNM (2026 ACPPNM Conference), the Nuclear Security Officer (CPPNM), and the Nuclear Security Guidance Committee Coordinator. This role involves assisting with conference and other meeting arrangements and follow-up, developing necessary materials, and coordinating within the Section and the Division on these critical matters.
Role
Under the guidance of the Co-Scientific Secretaries for the ACPPNM Preparatory Committee and Conferences, the Associate Nuclear Security Officer (A/CPPNM) will fulfill several key roles:
- Assistant: Supporting technical officers in coordinating various activities related to A/CPPNM events, ensuring they are effective, coordinated, and reflect the official IAEA position or policy.
- Facilitator: Collaborating with technical officers on outreach efforts for the universalization of the ACPPNM.
- Team Member: Supporting the delivery and evaluation of the broader program on international legal instruments for nuclear security and nuclear security guidance. Opportunities may also arise to act as a facilitator for the Nuclear Security Guidance Committee.
Partnerships
The Associate Nuclear Security Officer (A/CPPNM) will consult with relevant nuclear security experts and personnel from various IAEA departments and divisions to facilitate the effective organization of A/CPPNM events.
Functions / Key Results Expected
- Liaise with Conference Services, or event preparers in the coordination of activities related to A/CPPNM events.
- Follow-up and tracking of activities related to the A/CPPNM events in close collaborative relationships with technical officers of the Division, including maintenance of SharePoint and the NUSEC portal as necessary.
- Contribute to the team, Section and Division in the preparation and updating, and (in some cases) delivery of briefing material.
- Assisting in preparing materials for outreach activities for universalization of the ACPPNM.
- Advise technical officers of the Division on the development process for Nuclear Security Series Guidance.
- Prepare summary reports of proceedings of various meetings and international conferences as appropriate.
- Carry out other functions as allocated by the Section Head.

Education, Experience and Language Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Sciences, International Relations, Law or other relevant field.
- Minimum two years experience in supporting or coordinating activities such as large meetings or Conferences, preferably with multiple, international stakeholders.
- Experience in a Governmental environment an asset.
- Excellent oral and written command of English. Knowledge of other official IAEA languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish) is an asset.
