Role Overview

The Database Pipeline Engineer will support the Department of Veterans Affairs in designing, building, and maintaining scalable, secure data pipelines across cloud platforms. This position focuses on efficient, reliable, and secure data flows from source systems to various destinations including data warehouses, analytics platforms, and machine learning models.

Responsibilities & Duties

  • Pipeline Architecture & Design: Design scalable data pipelines using cloud-native tools (AWS Glue, Azure Data Factory, Google Cloud Dataflow).
  • Data Ingestion & Integration: Build connectors for data sources from databases, APIs, files, or streaming platforms.
  • ETL/ELT Development: Implement processes with tools such as Apache Spark or Databricks to clean and enrich data.
  • Monitoring & Troubleshooting: Set up pipeline monitoring, alerting, troubleshoot failures, and maintain logs.
  • Automation & Orchestration: Automate deployments using Apache Airflow, AWS Step Functions, and Infrastructure as Code (Terraform).
  • Collaboration & Documentation: Work with cross-functional teams, document designs, and provide training/support.
  • Cost Optimization: Monitor and optimize resource usage for large-scale data handling.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Public Administration or related field (Master’s preferred). Hands-on experience with ETL tools, FlyAway for database migration, and proficiency in cloud-native pipeline tools. Strong skills in scripting (Python, Bash), troubleshooting, and performance tuning; ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust security clearance.

Preferred Qualifications & Core Competencies

Prior experience supporting federal agencies (especially the VA), familiarity with VA Lighthouse tools, relevant certifications, and a proven track record in a remote environment. Core values include integrity, empathy, strong work ethic, and a commitment to lifelong learning.
