About the Role: Senior Global Employment Counsel at Hyland
As a Senior Global Employment Counsel at Hyland, you will play a pivotal role in analyzing and providing expert legal advice on routine, moderately complex, and complex legal issues, specifically those presenting moderate levels of legal, business, or financial risk. This position requires frequent interaction with various internal stakeholders, including business unit management, VPs, C-level executives, as well as external customers, partners, vendors, and outside counsel.
You will serve as the primary legal advisor to the HR department on all labor and employment matters, while also contributing significantly to Hyland's broader compliance and privacy initiatives. Your responsibilities demand a proactive approach that aligns with the Company's business objectives and addresses internal client requirements with appropriate urgency.
Key Responsibilities
- Analyze and provide comprehensive legal advice to Hyland, management, and employees concerning legal matters with varying levels of risk.
- Offer day-to-day legal support to the Human Resources department on critical areas such as hiring processes, employee relations, performance management, terminations, and workplace investigations.
- Draft, review, and meticulously update essential employment agreements, company policies, employee handbooks, and codes of conduct.
- Provide expert guidance on wage and hour compliance, leave laws, reasonable accommodations, and a wide array of other workplace regulatory requirements.
- Collaborate strategically with the HR team on employee training initiatives and significant organizational change projects.
- Effectively manage employment-related disputes and oversee the engagement of outside counsel when necessary.
- Actively support Hyland's comprehensive compliance program, encompassing policy development, risk assessments, training modules, and ongoing monitoring.
- Offer critical guidance on global data privacy laws, including GDPR, CCPA, and HIPAA where applicable, covering data subject rights, cross-border data transfers, and vendor contract negotiations.
Required Qualifications
- Juris Doctor Degree (or equivalent) and an active law license in the applicable jurisdiction.
- Fluent in English, demonstrating excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Exceptional attention to detail, strong administrative capabilities, and a proven ability to collaborate effectively within a team environment.
- Preferred 5+ years of relevant legal experience, including at least 3 years as in-house counsel specializing in employment law.
- Direct experience advising on employment law matters across both US and international jurisdictions.
- Preferred IAPP certification, showcasing expertise in privacy.
- Strong proficiency in conducting thorough legal research, gathering and compiling information, drafting sophisticated commercial contracts, and preparing detailed memoranda and other legal communications.
- Strong interpersonal and negotiation skills.
- Alternatively, an equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates the successful ability to perform the principal duties of the job.
