Network Management Engineer
Hydro One is seeking a Network Management Engineer to join their team in Toronto. This role involves conducting in-depth studies and analyses to determine customer and system needs for transmission and distribution assets. The engineer will develop strategies, analyze problems, and facilitate the delivery of solutions through external service providers. A key aspect of the role is participating in the development and refinement of programs, processes, and technical standards for asset management. The position also requires involvement in monitoring and controlling major programs and complex projects during their execution phase, coordinating activities with service providers, and preparing business cases. The engineer will represent the unit in negotiations and discussions with customers, stakeholders, and regulatory authorities, acting as a technical resource for asset management matters.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct operations research, technical/economic/environmental/business/regulatory impact assessments, and other specialized studies to determine transmission/distribution customer/system needs.
- Analyze problems, develop strategies, alternatives, and preferred solutions, and facilitate the delivery of solutions through suppliers and service providers.
- Participate in the development and preparation of programs, processes, technical/operational/business standards, procedures, or methods related to transmission/distribution asset management.
- Monitor, control, and redirect major programs and complex projects during the execution phase.
- Coordinate activities with Service Providers and stakeholders, resolving issues through negotiation.
- Prepare comprehensive reports, specifications, and presentations to resolve issues.
- Participate in the preparation of business cases for transmission/distribution asset management.
- Be responsible for the preparation of contract specifications and awards, providing technical direction to service providers and monitoring their performance.
- Represent the unit in discussions and negotiations with customers, stakeholders, and suppliers.
- Act as a technical resource and consultant on transmission/distribution asset management.
- Contribute to the development of the business plan and regulatory submissions.
- Maintain awareness of advancing technology developments in business/transmission/distribution equipment and systems.
- Provide technical guidance to others, assist in problem resolution, and train new staff.
- Possess a Professional Engineering Ontario (PEO) License (P.ENG License) and seal.
Qualifications
- Requires knowledge of engineering science and business administration, project management, electrical power systems and equipment relating to transmission/distribution assets, mathematics, information technology, and analytical studies.
- Requires knowledge of economics for evaluations and assessment of alternatives.
- Requires knowledge of technical writing for contract documents, scopes of work, presentations, reports, and specifications.
- Typically acquired through 4 years of University training (Grade XII plus 5 years).
- Must possess a Professional Engineering Ontario (PEO) License (P.ENG License) and seal.
- Requires over 8 and up to 10 years of experience in electrical power system operational and business requirements, policies, practices, and procedures governing transmission/distribution assets.
- Requires broad experience in the design, performance, commissioning, operation, and maintenance of transmission/distribution assets.
- Requires experience in project management, including scoping, estimating, scheduling, execution planning, monitoring, redirection, and change management.
- Requires utility experience with power system construction, operation, and maintenance, dealing with customers and suppliers.
- Requires experience with corporate financial business and regulatory policies.
- Requires experience with the application of information technology to management control systems.
- Requires experience with business and regulatory processes and procedures in a regulated utility.
