Role Overview

As a Bakery Cake Designer, you will be primarily responsible for decorating a variety of bakery items. This role involves assisting customers with their bakery orders both over the telephone and in person at the store. You will play a crucial part in maintaining a positive company image by consistently providing courteous, friendly, and efficient customer service to all customers and team members. Please note, applicants must be 18 years of age or older.

Reporting Relations

This position is accountable to and reports to the District Store Director, Store Manager, Assistant Managers of Perishables, Store Operations, and Health Wellness Home, and the Bakery Department Manager. There are no positions that report directly to the Bakery Cake Designer.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide prompt, efficient, and friendly customer service by exhibiting caring, concern, and patience in all customer interactions, treating customers as the most important people in the store.
  • Smile and greet customers in a friendly manner, regardless of where the encounter takes place within the store.
  • Make an effort to learn customers’ names and address them by name whenever possible.
  • Assist customers by escorting them to products, securing out-of-reach items, loading/unloading heavy goods, and performing other tasks to enhance their shopping experience.
  • Answer the telephone promptly and provide friendly, helpful service, including taking product orders.
  • Take customer orders directly at the Bakery counter.
  • Work collaboratively with co-workers to ensure customer satisfaction and a pleasant work environment.
  • Check daily orders and establish a timeline and production schedule.
  • Decorate bakery items in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Stay current on new designs and trends in the bakery industry.
  • Ensure that all department standards are consistently met.
  • Daily check cake orders for details such as size, decoration package, icing needs, and dates, indicating any necessary supply needs.
  • Order supplies for the decorating area and verify incoming deliveries.
  • Deliver and set up wedding cakes on-site at various locations outside the store.
  • Communicate daily with the bakery manager regarding displays, weekly advertisements, and special needs.
  • Check product dates, pull cases for work, and list items needing replenishment or replacement.
  • Develop daily bakery orders for bakers, including specifying cakes and sizes.
  • Track daily retail production and identify tasks for completion with co-workers.
  • Operate as a lead worker, instructing and reviewing the work of part-time or other employees.
  • Participate actively in employee cross-training initiatives.
  • Understand and consistently practice proper sanitation procedures, ensuring the work area remains clean and neat.
  • Adhere strictly to all company policies and individual store guidelines.
  • Report to work as scheduled and on time.
Secondary Duties And Responsibilities
  • Wrap all products as required.
  • Provide assistance in other areas of the store when needed.
  • Perform other job-related duties and special projects as requested.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities And Worker Characteristics

Candidates must possess the ability to solve practical problems involving various variables with limited standardization and interpret instructions effectively. The role requires proficiency in arithmetic calculations involving fractions, decimals, and percentages, as well as the ability to file, post, and mail materials, copy data, interview for basic information, and provide basic direction.

Education And Experience

A high school diploma or equivalent experience is required, along with six months or less of similar or related work experience.

Physical Requirements

This position requires the physical ability to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally (shared team lifting), up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Visual requirements include near vision (less than 20 inches) and far vision (more than 20 feet) with or without correction, color vision, depth perception, and a wide field of vision. The job also entails performing physical activities such as climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and engaging in repetitive motions.

Working Conditions

The duties for this position are primarily conducted in a store environment. There is significant pressure to meet deadlines and manage multiple priorities. Exposure to flour dust, noise, cleaning chemicals/solvents, residual fumes, and temperature extremes is part of the working conditions.

Equipment Used to Perform Job

Standard tools and equipment used in a bakery environment, including mixers, ovens, turntables, decorating tips, bags, an airbrush, telephone, copy cake machine, and an intercom system.

Contacts

The Bakery Cake Designer will have daily contact with the general public for order taking and weekly contact with suppliers/vendors.
