Position Overview: Mass Tort Paralegal
The Mass Tort Paralegal will play a crucial role in assisting attorneys with fact investigation, legal research, document preparation and production, and comprehensive client service. This position focuses specifically on New York asbestos practice. Key responsibilities include managing discovery, preparing for depositions, conducting investigations, assisting with trial and mediation preparation, analyzing factual information, drafting pleadings and motions, managing document and case databases, scheduling, calendaring, and participating in trials. The candidate will also prepare fact and expert witness lists for various jurisdictions.
Key Responsibilities and Functions
- Maintain a professional demeanor and adhere to firm policies.
- Demonstrate meticulous attention to detail and high-quality work.
- Develop technical proficiency in database management, electronic research, and file maintenance.
- Independently organize and manage files, or delegate and supervise tasks to Paralegal Assistants.
- Actively participate in in-house CLEs and mentor Paralegal Assistants.
- Anticipate attorney needs and independently manage key duties.
- Meet an annual billable hour requirement of 1500 hours.
- Deliver superior service to internal and external clients with effective communication.
- Interact professionally and courteously with clients and colleagues; maintain a professional appearance.
- Utilize excellent organizational, time-management, and prioritization skills.
- Collaborate effectively within a team and adapt to evolving business demands.
- Produce efficient, accurate, and high-quality work product.
- Exercise sound judgment, make practical decisions, and act decisively under deadlines.
- Maintain a high level of professional integrity, confidentiality, and trust.
- Lead and motivate others, including managing direct reports when applicable.
Position Requirements
- New York litigation experience is required, with New York asbestos experience preferred.
- A Paralegal Certificate or Bachelor’s degree in a law-related field, or an Associate’s degree combined with paralegal training, is essential.
Compensation and Benefits
Compensation is competitive and commensurate with skill, experience, and location. Expected compensation ranges vary by state/jurisdiction:
- State of California: $84,000 - $112,000
- State of Colorado: $67,000 - $92,000
- State of Illinois: $72,000 - $98,000
- State of Maryland: $70,000 - $98,000
- State Massachusetts: $76,000 - $90,000
- State of Minnesota: $89,000 - $100,000
- Jersey City, NJ: $85,000 - $116,000
- State of New York: $79,000 - $116,000
- State of Washington: $78,000 - $106,000
- Washington, DC: $85,000 - $115,000
Discretionary bonuses are non-guaranteed and depend on individual and firm performance.
