If you are an expert at uncovering why users do what they do, synthesizing messy feedback into clear personas, and advocating for the human on the other side of the screen, this is a great opportunity to apply your curiosity flexibly while shaping products people actually love.

This role is ideal for research practitioners who want to conduct deep-dive studies, usability tests, and discovery sprints for multiple innovative companies on a part-time, project-based, or advisory basis.

Key Responsibilities

• Usability Testing: Designing and moderating live sessions to watch real people struggle with or succeed in using a product.
• User Interviews: Conducting 1:1 discovery calls to uncover deep-seated pain points, motivations, and mental models.
• Survey Design: Crafting unbiased surveys to gather quantitative validation from a broader audience.
• Journey Mapping: Visualizing the end-to-end user experience to identify friction points and "moments of truth."
• Information Architecture (IA): Running Card Sorting or Tree Testing exercises to ensure the navigation structure makes sense to humans, not just developers.
• Persona Development: Creating data-backed user archetypes to help the engineering and design teams build for a specific audience.
• Heuristic Evaluation: Auditing an existing interface against established usability principles to find quick wins.
• Insight Reporting: Presenting findings to stakeholders in a way that compels them to take action.

Required Qualities

• Proven Experience: A portfolio of case studies showing how your research directly influenced product decisions.
• Methodology Master: Comfortable with both Qualitative (interviews, observation) and Quantitative (analytics, A/B testing stats) research methods.
• Tool Proficiency: Expertise with research platforms and design tools.
• Neutrality: The ability to remain objective and avoid confirmation bias when testing your own client’s ideas.
• Empathy: A genuine curiosity about human behavior and the patience to listen.
• Communication: The ability to tell a story with data—explaining not just what happened, but why it matters.
• Agile Familiarity: Experience working within swift sprint cycles where research needs to be "just enough, just in time."
