Key Responsibilities of a Fractional Internal Auditor

• Risk Assessment: Conducting comprehensive enterprise risk assessments to identify financial, operational, and strategic vulnerabilities.
• Audit Planning: Developing and executing a risk-based internal audit plan aligned with the organization's strategic objectives.
• Control Evaluation: Testing the design and operational effectiveness of internal controls to prevent fraud, waste, and financial misstatement.
• Operational Audits: Reviewing cross-functional business processes to identify bottlenecks and recommend efficiency improvements.
• Executive Reporting: Drafting clear, concise audit reports for executive management and the Board of Directors, highlighting findings and actionable recommendations.
• Remediation Tracking: Following up with department leaders to ensure agreed-upon corrective actions are implemented effectively and on time.
• Policy Review: Assessing current company policies and procedures to ensure they are robust, documented, and consistently followed by staff.
• Advisory Services: Acting as an independent consultant to management on the control implications of new system implementations or business initiatives.

Required Qualities for a Fractional Internal Auditor

• Proven Experience: Background in internal audit, public accounting, or enterprise risk management at a senior level.
• Professional Certifications: Holding recognized, industry-standard certifications in auditing, risk, or accounting is highly preferred.
• Objectivity: The ability to remain completely independent and unbiased, even when evaluating the work of senior leadership.
• Diplomacy: Exceptional interpersonal skills to navigate sensitive conversations when pointing out flaws or control failures to department heads.
• Business Acumen: Understanding how different business units interconnect, ensuring that recommendations are commercially viable, not just theoretically sound.
• Analytical Rigor: The ability to analyze large volumes of data and operational documentation to spot anomalies and trends.
• Communication: Translating complex audit findings into plain-language business risks for the executive team.
