General Position Overview
HMM is looking for a Legal Claims Coordinator to support our growing Claims Department. If you’re detail-oriented, organized, and interested in international logistics, this could be a great opportunity for you. In this role, you’ll manage cargo claims from start to finish—communicating with customers, collecting documentation, processing payments, and handling recovery efforts. You’ll work with a variety of partners including rail companies, truckers, stevedores, and terminals. Under general supervision, provides support for all bulk and container cargo claims.
Essential Job Functions/Duties
- Handle claims from beginning to end, including data entry and document management
- Collect and review claim documentation to support defense or settlement
- Open claims in our system, create reference numbers and maintain an organized claim folder
- Coordinate recovery efforts with third parties (vessel owners, rail companies, trucking firms, etc.)
- Negotiate claim settlements
- Process claim payments with the Accounting Department
- Assist with payment and resolution of claims as requested by our headquarters
- Keep management updated on key claim issues
- Maintain accurate and organized records
- Support the team with other duties as needed
Qualifications: Essential Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
- Strong communication skills and a problem-solving mindset
- Excellent organizational and follow-up abilities
- Detail-oriented, especially when handling important claim documents
- Comfortable using Microsoft Word, Excel, and internal company systems
- Preferred: Bilingual in English and Korean
Education and Experience
- Experience handling claims (preferably in ocean shipping or property/casualty insurance)
- Bachelor’s degree in Business or a related field (preferred)
- 2+ years of experience in the shipping or logistics industry (preferred)

Additional Details
The pay range listed for this position is the anticipated starting salary or wage range, and the final offered rate will be based on individual merit and the relative compensation of employees in similar positions. HMM employee benefits include highly subsidized individual and family insurance coverage (medical, dental and vision), term life and disability insurance, 401(k) employer matching contributions, paid holidays, and up to 10 vacation days and six sick days in the first year.
