About the role
Public Health Terminologist
HireClearedTalent is seeking a Public Health Vocabulary Subject Matter Expert (SME) to support critical data governance initiatives. This role focuses on designing, developing, and implementing terminology and data standards solutions to enhance interoperability, data quality, and public health surveillance across federal, state, and local programs.
Key Responsibilities
- Design & Implement Terminology Solutions: Develop and integrate public health coding systems and standards (LOINC, SNOMED, ICD-10, FHIR, HL7) to enable seamless data exchange across clinical, laboratory, and epidemiological systems.
- Data Standards Strategy & Modernization: Provide expert guidance on data standards and vocabulary authoring to support modernization of terminology tools, particularly within CDC environments.
- Vocabulary Mapping & Analysis: Research and map complex laboratory assays and scientific data to standardized vocabularies to support accurate reporting, analytics, and surveillance.
- Collaboration & Standards Development: Partner with development teams and stakeholders to create, refine, and implement emerging public health data standards.
- Data Quality Improvement: Analyze datasets and apply advanced data practices to improve the quality, consistency, and usability of public health data.
Required Qualifications
- 10+ years of experience as a Public Health Terminologist or related role.
- Strong experience with public health coding systems and standards, including: LOINC, SNOMED, ICD-10-CM, USCDI+, FHIR / HL7 messaging.
- Knowledge of vocabulary authoring procedures.
- Experience providing data standards strategy and modernization support (preferably for CDC or similar organizations).
- Ability to interpret complex scientific, laboratory, and surveillance terminology.
- Proven experience mapping laboratory assays to standardized vocabularies.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance.
- Bachelor’s degree (BA/BS).
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in state, local, or federal public health environments.
- Hands-on experience implementing public health standards in healthcare or laboratory systems.
- Experience with data analysis tools such as Excel, SQL, SAS, R, or Python.
- Familiarity with PHINVADS.
- Knowledge of infectious disease surveillance and public health informatics.
- Advanced degree (MA/MS) in Public Health, Epidemiology, Biostatistics, or Health Informatics.
